Mommies Who Rock

AlmaSchneider3.jpgUsually, my posts will be about cool, or at least sort of cool, stuff for kids. But last night, I was moved by something a bunch of moms did. When woman-around-town Alma Schneider, you may know her as the queen of Parents Who Rock, sent an email reminder of the all-woman Goddess Rock fundraiser last night at Diva Lounge, I booked my favorite sitter, talked my husband into it and headed out the door.

At some point in this creative rock show, Alma emphasized that all of the vocalists were, in fact, mothers, and I tried to imagine my own mother’s friends putting on these kinds of performances in 1977. The only place their generation could express themselves so openly was in the church choir singing renditions of In the Sweet, Bye and Bye. Last night, forget the hymns. One Liz Phair-like mom, Aviva Patz, sang:

Drug me up/medicate me
Love me up/please sedate me
I get so high on your pills
Just pop the top and I get chills

I’m sure she wasn’t talking about Gummy Vites, thank god. Aviva reminded me that there is life postpartum.

The night was good, gritty fun that made me jones for the cigarettes I gave up in college. And, of course, it was for a good cause. Goddess Rock packed Diva Lounge at $10 a head. The proceeds went to The Pink Breast Cancer Program in Newark, NJ, which is definitely sweet, in the bye and bye.

Thank you so much for writing up our fabulous show. No, we are not a bunch of ladies who lunch or desperate housewives! We are women on a mission to stay in touch with our creative side and rock the suburbs. MontclairKids.com ROCKS! Thanks for the shout out!
