Over some delicious treats from Le Baker’s Dozen, the moms at our playgroup started talking about Wii, the interactive video game from Nintendo. It seems like most Baristaville preschoolers are big time Wii gamers. Many of us felt like our kids were the only ones without the game.

One mom in our group bit the bullet and bought her 8-year-old a Wii for his birthday. My girls don’t even know what a Wii is, but if they wanted one, I’d at least wait till they turned 8. Would you?

We don’t have a Wii in our house, but the main reason is that my husband is just not into video games since Atari. Neither am I, though I did play a mean game of Centipede back in the day. I think it’s safe to assume that the preschoolers with a Wii have parents who play too. Like Kristen’s kids playing with their dad above.

It got me thinking….How old should a kid be to Wii?

  1. We got the kids a Wii for Xmas 2007. My eldest was a few months shy of nine at the time. If you have more than one kid, waiting for a magical age doesn’t work so well. My daughter started playing Wii tennis and bowling at 5 1/2. I don’t think it’s the game system, but rather the games, and how much you let them play. Everything in moderation.

  2. Liz speaks the truth. Why 8? Why not 9? Or 7? As I watch mrs. Prof and the little prof playing his Nintendo DS I struggle to see ANY problems with video games.
Btw, we got the wii when he was 4. And spent HOURS playing Excite Truck together.
We also eat Breakfast and Dinner together everyday.
Video games are just one other thing we do together.
    They are not evil.
    Just another family activity.

  3. My sis got the wii when her son was 5, and its a staple at family gatherings — something we can all play together. Unlike most board games, the wii is really an all ages activity — a 5 year old can pretend to bowl as well as a 9 year old or a 30 year old or even a 65 year old can (yes, even grandma plays — which the little one just loves). I’m no gamer but the wii doesn’t feel like a video game — probably because you are on your feet — and everyone in my family, all ages, has fun when we play.
