A big red chair just rolled past my house.
Apparently, it was for The Little Read, a free reading festival going on all over town this weekend.
So why is a chair gliding down Plymouth Street? Montclair dad Frank Hentschker made a gigantic red chair that needed to get from his garage to the Montclair Public Library’s main branch. He lined up a flatbed truck, but the truck was too small. So he decided to take it to the streets.
You know Clifford the Big Red Dog? This is the Big Red Chair, all 7 feet of it.
Frank happens to live a few houses down from me with his wife, MPL Foundation board member Eve Schaenen. He said he only spent a few days making the chair, and he used some materials people were throwing out for bulky waste day. BTW, his favorite children’s book is Pippi Longstocking. Eve’s is Charlotte’s Web.
That Big Red Chair should be in its new home now–across from the circulation desk at the main branch. Stop in and see it. And don’t miss The Little Read this weekend, Friday through Sunday, which takes place all over town. The schedule is here. I’m reading at the main branch at 10:45 on Saturday, and Georgette is reading on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
My favorite kids’ book is The Giving Tree. What’s yours?

favorites when my kids were younger:
Picture book: Go Dog, Go (if we see 2 or more dogs together we still recite passages from the book)
Longer stories: books by Virgina Lee Burton (Katy and The Big Snow) and Bill Peet (How Droofus the Dragon Lost His Head).
Recently, in the checkout line at Wegmans, I spotted “My First Counting Book” (an old-fashioned Golden Book) — when I got a glimpse of the Garth Williams cover illustration it sent me into a strange time warp — it had been one of my favorite books when I was very little – it was like bumping into a long-last friend — I bought three copies!
