Lt. Robert Rowan, Juvenile Aid Bureau Commander at Montclair Police Department says officers picked up a group of teenage graffiti culprits:

Nine juveniles were recently arrested and charged with criminal trespass and/or criminal mischief stemming from an investigation into recent vandalism to the Watchung Train station. The interior of the train station was covered with graffiti consisting of drawings and sayings and the station was also used as a hang out for the teens.

All juveniles were turned over to their parents following their arrests.

Vandalism to the station was reported on September 16; the investigation concluded today. No other details are available.

All the stories I read about teens getting arrested always say the same thing.
    …. released to the parents….
Let them learn a lesson and spend a night in the pokey.

At the very least they should be responsible for cleaning up the graffiti.

They just may have to do that… after a judge orders them to.

maybe the teens are trying to claim a parking spot now at the train station, and have it ready in time for after college.

It’s this generation calling out for a REC CENTER in Montclair. This has happened over and over and NO ONE listens.
Where is the REC CENTER that is needed for kids to hang out in in Montclair?

A rec center doesn’t take the place of responsible and attentive parenting!

Give them a Rec center and then they can destroy that as well. No substitute for good parenting. Where are your kids tonight. Do you know?

I don’t think the kid who engages in vandalism is crying out for a rec center.
And I’m curious, is anyone aware of a community that has a successful rec/teen center – i.e. is utilized and serves to decrease teen “problems” (however those might be defined.) I’ve always felt that any such center would be avoided like the plague by most kids. I mean once adults get involved that sort of assures it will be uncool.

We need one of those rec centers that are open 24/7, with bars on the windows and locks on the cell doors.

The cops don't need to be everywhere at once, the penalties need to be harsh. It is not hyperbole JC. No one is slowing down for a few hundred bucks. 5k or 10k and you can be sure that "speed won't be creeping up" on folks.
