When the starting gun was fired on Highland Avenue early this evening, more than 1,100 people took off through the streets of Glen Ridge for the Fitzgerald’s 1928 Lager Run. The 5K race finished at Hurrell Field, where the post-race party served up hotdogs and lager. Race proceeds will go to the Glen Ridge Community Fund. Race director Dan Murphy said this was the biggest turnout so far with participation up 100 percent from last year.

Michael Dixon of Fanwood, NJ took first place, Hector Rivera of Clifton took second and Ben Clarke of Morristown took third. Catherine Smith of Wayne was first woman over the finish line.

Pulling in last in 1,129th place, with a time just under one hour, was 81-year-old Bill Welsh of Staten Island. God bless him.

Kudos once again to race director Dan Murphy for a job well done! Also, thanks to Mother Nature for near-perfect weather conditions this year.

What, no pierogies? I’m aghast at this egregious oversight! Not.

Montclair is relatively heterogenous and, it could fairly be said, takes pride in its diversity. Has Montclair named a street or school after Dr. King? Why is that?
