Montclair International Film Festival’s outdoor sing-a-long screening of The Sound of Music was postponed two weeks ago due to rain, but this Friday, June 3, the show will go on! Bring a lawn chair and join the crowd of Captain Von Trapp fans (including me) and sing Edelweiss surrounded by the beautiful Iris Gardens.

The South Orange and Maplewood Artists Studio Tour will take place on Sunday, June 5, turning SOMA into a art-lovers dream. Artists will be opening their studios to visitors and exhibiting at the many art venues throughout the two towns, in a community-wide, day-long celebration of SOMA’s vibrant art scene. Presented by 1978 Maplewood Arts Center and the Pierro Gallery of South Orange, this self-guided tour allows viewers to meet local artists in their workspaces, explore the many galleries around town, and have the opportunity to purchase art from more than 60 participating painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, jewelers and craftspeople, many of them new to the tour this year. Baristanet and Barista Kids contributor Joy Yagid is one of the talented artists. Art will also be on view at many local businesses, at 1978, the Baird Center and Pierro Gallery, and at the Maplewood Municipal Building and Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University.

See the opening of 4th Wall Theatre’s production, A Man of No Importance, based on the book by Terrence McNally and film starring Albert Finney. It’s the story of Alfie Byrne, a closeted bus conductor and Oscar Wilde devotee, in 1964 Dublin. As he leads his amateur theatre troupe toward a production of Wilde’s Salome at the local church, he struggles to find acceptance, not only from his sister, co-workers, and the church and world-at-large, but within himself. His quiet anthem, simply stated is “You just have to love who you love.”
