Bicycle stolen from garage on Melrose Place; Open liquor bottles and passengers not wearing seatbelts; teens pull alarms in Montclair school; drug arrests
On 12/9/11 at approximately 9:40 AM, police responded to a single-family residence on Melrose Place on a report of a burglary. The victim told police that sometime between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM on the 8th, someone had entered his detached garage and stolen a boy, blue-colored 26” Pacifica mountain bike, valued at approximately $100. The victim noticed it when he went to set his alarm and was informed that a window in the garage was open. He then checked the area and discovered that the window had been opened, with the screen to the window having been cut along the bottom. There are no suspects at this time.

On 12/9/11 at approximately 9:10 PM, police responded to the Glen Ridge Police Headquarters to take custody of Dwayne Jones. Jones, 54, of Montclair, was placed under arrest after police confirmed that he had a warrant issued by Montclair, with bail set at $682.50. He was also found to have a warrant issued by East Orange, with bail set at $250.
On 12/10/11 at approximately 1:10 AM, police were conducting a DWI Checkpoint on Bloomfield Avenue when they stopped a Chevrolet Tahoe after observing that the windows were tinted and two passengers were not wearing seatbelts. Police also located open bottles of rum and cognac in the vehicle. While issuing motor vehicle summonses to the occupants, one of the passengers, later identified as Jason Almodovar, provided police what was later determined to be a fake name. The driver was issued a motor vehicle summons for tinted windows, another passenger was issued a summons for possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, while a third passenger was issued a motor vehicle summons for failure to wear a seatbelt. All three were released from the scene.
Almodovar, 24, of Paterson, was placed under arrest and charged with hindering apprehension by providing false information to a law enforcement officer. He was issued motor vehicle summonses for failure to wear a seatbelt and possession of an open container of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. Bail was set at $1,500. He was also found to have a warrant issued by Paterson, with bail set at $1,000.
Vandalism to a Motor Vehicle
On 12/11/11 at approximately 4:30 PM, police responded to Claremont Avenue on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. The victim reported that he parked his Dodge Ram in the driveway on the 10th at 5:00 PM. When he returned to the vehicle on the 11th at approximately 4:00 PM, he discovered that two of the tires had been slashed. There are no suspects at this time.
Theft from a Motor Vehicle
On 12/11/11 at approximately 8:20 PM, police responded to Orange Road on a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. The victim stated that she parked her Kia Rio on the street at approximately 5:30 PM on that date. When she returned to the vehicle approximately two and a half hours later, she discovered that a Garmin GPS, valued at $200, had been stolen from the glove compartment. There was no evidence of forced entry to the vehicle and there are no suspects at this time.
On 12/10/11 at approximately 8:20 PM, police responded to The Brookside School on a report of activated alarms. Upon arrival, police located a seventeen year old Montclair male outside the school. The juvenile was found to be in possession of alcoholic beverages. Soon thereafter, police located seven other juveniles from Montclair in ages ranging from fourteen to seventeen years old. Police learned that four of the group had entered the school through an unlocked door. As a result of further investigation, two seventeen year old Montclair males, a fifteen year old Montclair female, and a fourteen year old Montclair male were charged with burglary, criminal trespass, and underage possession/consumption of an alcoholic beverage. A fourteen year old Upper Montclair male, a seventeen year old Upper Montclair male, and a seventeen year old Montclair male were charged with underage possession/consumption of an alcoholic beverage and trespassing. A sixteen year old Montclair male was charged with trespassing. All were later turned over to their guardians.
On 12/9/11 at approximately 4:45 PM, detectives were conducting an investigation on Mission Street when they observed an individual identified as Darryl Hill engaging in activities commonly associated with drug trafficking. Detectives were also aware that Hill had a warrant for his arrest issued by Montclair. Hill was detained in the area of the Shell Gas Station on Bloomfield Avenue. Further investigation revealed that Hill was in possession of four folds of heroin and four packages of Suboxone, for which he did not have a prescription. $10 was seized from Hill as suspected proceeds from drug distribution.
Hill, 38, of Orange, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of prescription legend drugs with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within one thousand feet of Glenfield School, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within five hundred feet of public housing located at 10 Pine Street. Bail was set at $50,000.
On 12/10/11 at approximately 7:00 PM, detectives were in the area of Lincoln Street when they observed a silver Taurus making an illegal U-turn. Detectives stopped the vehicle in the area of Washington Avenue and Alden Avenue and spoke to the driver, later identified as Idris Scott. A records check revealed that Scott had a warrant for his arrest issued by Newark, with bail set at $230. Fifteen aluminum folds containing crack cocaine were recovered from inside the vehicle during further investigation.
Scott, 40, of Orange, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute. Bail was set at $15,000.
On 12/10/11 at approximately 9:20 PM, detectives were in the area of the Maple Plaza Lot when they stopped an individual after earlier observations led them to believe that he may be in possession of an alcoholic beverage and did not appear to be old enough to legally do so. Upon detaining the individual, detectives learned that he was a seventeen year old Montclair resident. Further investigation revealed that he was also in possession of a zip-lock bag containing marijuana and numerous bottles of beer.
The juvenile was placed under arrest and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and underage possession of an alcoholic beverage. He was later turned over to a guardian.
