Cupcakes by Carousel Charms Montclair’s Church Street

Lovers of red velvet cupcakes (Oprah’s favorite!) were excited when we told you about Cupcakes by Carousel back in January. Now that the store has opened on Montclair’s Church Street, we found a lot more to love on Cupcakes by Carousel’s menu. Some baristas with kid tasters in tow tried a sampling of cupcakes and some favorites emerged.

The key lime cupcake won my tastebuds over — a ringer for its namesake pie. Another surprise hit was the carrot cupcake — moist, with shredded carrot, nuts and a not-too-sweet cream cheese frosting. The kids of course loved the “Hostess,” Oreo and a snowball-inspired cupcake topped with sweetened coconut.

Besides cupcakes in every imaginable flavor (like the Curious George: vanilla cake filled with homemade banana custard, topped with peanut butter cream, then dipped in chocolate ganache and drizzled with peanut butter sauce), the store also offers whole cakes, pies as well as macarons at $1.50 apiece. Oh, and if you need a sugar fix sans cake, you can belly up to Carousel’s “bar” for a stiff shot of frosting.
