Nutley resident Silas Mountsier will be opening up his private garden again this year under the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program.

This extraordinary garden, which features garden rooms, a bamboo grove, geometric hornbeams, Japanese forest grass, a huge hill of liriope, and 180 outdoor art objects, will be open to the public tomorrow, April 23, from 10am to 4pm, 205 Rutgers Place. The price is a mere $5; no reservations needed.

Designed to introduce gardening to the public, the Open Days program is the only national private garden-visiting program. Viewings take place across the country throughout the year. You can see the schedule here.

I am glad this story had a happy ending. It could have very well gone the other way. When I was a wee one, back in the Stone Age, we had head counts and roll call in school and on class trips. When your name was called, you called out "Here!" Maybe they need to be reinstated again.
