WINNER: Congratulations to melissaann from Normal, IL !
Mother’s Day is almost here, and what better gift for a mom or soon-to-be mom than one of these recently released mom-penned books. All of the stories are funny and relatable. And while you won’t find a lot of cooking, cleaning or craft tips, you will find lots to enjoy and laugh about as these women poke fun at the real joys—and trials—of modern motherhood.
by Tracy Beckerman
This New Jersey mom tells all about her transition from career woman to suburban stay-at-home mom with candor and wit that engages the reader from the start. You can read more about Tracy and the book in this Barista Kids interview: Tracy Beckerman Talks Lost in Suburbia in Montclair.
An anthology by 37 Kick Ass Mom Bloggers
This collection of 36 essays covers everything from the indignities of childbirth to embarrassing toddler gaffes, and focuses on the real-life humor that motherhood provides daily. Put together by Jen of People I Want to Punch in the Throat, there are four New Jersey contributors: Kim Forde of The Fordeville Diaries, Kim Bongiorno of Let Me Start by Saying, Amy Bozza of My Real Life and Anna Sandler (that’s me!) of Random Handprints.
by Jill Smokler
Better known as Scary Mommy, the name of her incredibly popular blog and her best-selling first book, Confessions of a Scary Mommy, Jill’s latest release continues the theme of sharing, and laughing about, the real truth about life with your kids. Motherhood Comes Naturally debunks more than twenty motherhood myths, and as Jill so perfectly explains: “this is not a parenting manual or how-to guide… think of it instead as a coping resource.”
By Nicole Knepper
This collection of essays are as funny, outrageous and curse-laden as the title suggests, while also focusing on the “loving my kids” part of the title as well. Nicole also includes hilarious and heartwarming stories from her own childhood and the sage advice that “being a parent shouldn’t ever mean trying not to be just who you have always been.” The book is based on her blog Moms Who Drink and Swear, as well as her hugely “liked” Facebook page of the same name (over 250,000!).
By Amber Dusick
Amber’s first book is an outgrowth from her blog of the same name, Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures. Amber began her blog “to vent about the funny (and frustrating) day-to-day things that happened to me as a parent.” And even though her own son blurbed “The drawings aren’t very good, Mama,” the book is a fantastic read, both for the words and the (not-so) crappy pictures. As Amber reminds, “sometimes the crappiest moments make the best memories.”
