When Lisa Ryder, a Montclair mom, wrote this letter to Lands’ End questioning why the company offered realistic and cool science-themed tees for boys, but not girls, the letter went viral. Many parents agreed and voiced their feelings on the company’s Facebook page.

New Voices of 2014: Oh, What a Night!

Paper Mill Playhouse will present 120 of the of the region’s most talented young performing artists from Paper Mill Playhouse’s Summer Musical Theatre Conservatory in a fully produced, original concert on the Paper Mill mainstage titled New Voices of 2014: Oh, What a Night! on Friday, August 1 and Saturday, August 2.

Oh What a Night! is a tribute to the magical and unforgettable moments of the American musical.

Members of the competitive Conservatory who earned coveted spots in the Senior, Junior Plus, and Junior Companies (ages 10–18) are directed and choreographed by Paper Mill Playhouse’s professional artistic staff in this concert which is the culmination of the five-week program. Also appearing are numerous winners and nominees of the 2014 Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards who won scholarships to attend the Conservatory.

Montclair Township Animal Shelter

Does your kid love animals? The Montclair Township Animal Shelter is looking for volunteers to help our community’s homeless animals. Volunteers must be ages 10 and up and are required to attend an orientation.

All volunteers under 18 attending the orientation must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Anyone under 15 must join with an adult volunteer who will accompany them each time they perform their volunteer duties.

Bandleader and pianist Eddie Palmieri performs with his Salsa orchestra at NJPAC’s Sounds of the City tonight—a free outdoor concert series. Palmieri is known for his bold, innovative drive in a career that spans more than 50 years as the leader of salsa and Latin jazz orchestras. The winner of nine Grammy Awards, he was declared a 2013 Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Having just finished binge watching Luther on BBC, I really wish I was young enough to attend this event.  The Montclair Police Department would like to offer a little insight into the profession of crime scene investigation to kids in the 6th grade and up on Thursday, August 7, at the Montclair Public Library.

Topics covered will be fingerprints and DNA — from the science behind them to their practical use in police work, basic crime scene techniques and patrol officer functions, and an interactive roll-play exercise where Jr. Officers and Jr Detectives will work together to solve a crime.
