Star Tavern Makes a 101 Best Pizzas in America List

Star Tavern

The Daily Meal has put out its third annual annual list off 101 Best Pizzas in America and Star Tavern in Orange came in #37 representing for New Jersey:

The bar pie. In the annals of all things pizza, it is perhaps one of the most underrated styles. The maligned proponents of the pile-it-on philosophy behind deep dish pies get themselves bent out of shape when Chicago’s signature style gets besmirched, but there doesn’t seem to be a similar geographic identification attached to this much more nuanced, reserved, and minimalist approach to pizza. It’s a shame, save that it makes bar pie bastions like ColonyEddie’s, and Star Tavern in Orange, N.J. even easier to like, and selfishly, to eat at without battling a crowd. Owned and operated by the Vayianos family since 1980, “The Star” is run by former attorney Gary Vayianos, whose kitchen turns out super-thin, crispy, to-the-edges-with-the-sauce toppings, with a sauce and cheese ratio that delivers as much as you need and not more than the structural integrity can handle.

The Weekend: Labor Day Weekend

It’s a relatively quiet end of the summer Labor Day weekend. But in between your Labor Day BBQs, last hurrah beach trips, or other getaways, there are some fun things to do locally.

dean shotOn Friday night,  you can go to Ruthie’s BBQ & Pizza in Montclair to enjoy the music of Dean Shot. Shot’s playing incorporates many diverse musical influences and draws from his experiences growing up in Northern New Jersey, surrounded by various cultures. Finding inspiration in a large variety of early American music, Dean’s influences can often be clearly heard, yet he delivers a strong style that is most definitely all his own. As usual, Ruthie’s will be serving up good pizza and BBQ too. We suggest you try the Mac and Cheese.

Church Street. Montclair Center Stage. The Clairidge. Raymond’s. Farmers’ Market. Those are just five reasons why you should vote now for Montclair Center as the best downtown area in North Jersey.

Montclair Center has been named a finalist again by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association in the 2014 People’s Choice Awards for outstanding downtowns in North Jersey (We won it in 2013). The APA-NJ panelists considered how well a city’s downtown area functions as the centerpiece of everyday life for local residents, its reputation beyond the community’s boundaries, available options for transportation and support from community members to gain, maintain and develop businesses. Montclair is up against Hoboken, Historic Downtown Jersey City, and Downtown Morristown.
