Montclair Public Library Foundation Announces Seventh Annual The Little Read

The Little Read

The Montclair Public Library and its Foundation announces the seventh annual Little Read. The Little Read is a free children’s read-aloud marathon that brings together Montclair neighbors, writers, local heroes and celebrities in a town-wide celebration of literacy and community. The event will take place during the weekend of October 23 and 24.

Funds raised through sponsorships of this free event support the Children’s Department and the Children’s Summer Reading Program. This past summer saw more than 1,000 children enrolled in summer reading programs and activities. Scholastic has been a key partner and lead sponsor since the event’s inception in 2009.

“Scholastic’s mission to encourage the intellectual and personal growth of all children, beginning with literacy has made them a perfect partner for the library,” said David Hinkley, Montclair Public Library Director. “Their loyal support has benefited the library’s Children Department for many years.”

Baristanet, Boiling Springs Savings Bank, Montclair Film Festival, Montclair Rotary Club, Partners for Health and Rosemary and Al Iversen join Scholastic as sponsors.

The Little Read weekend begins at the Bellevue Avenue Library on Friday morning, October 23rd when community members read to preschool students from Lacordaire Academy, Pilsbury School, Union Congregational Nursery School, St. James and St. Cassian School. That afternoon, readings will also take place at the Baldwin and Fulton Street locations of the Montclair Child Development Center, the Montclair Community Pre-K and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.

The Little Read continues that Friday evening with its traditional “Bedtime Stories” event at the Main Library, along with a milk and cookies reception from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local authors will join Mayor Robert Jackson and Library Director David Hinkley for readings from the “Big Red Chair.”

On Saturday, October 24th at 11:00 am, Fire Chief John Herrmann and his firefighters will read aloud their favorite stories at the Upper Montclair Firehouse at 588 Valley Road. The Little Read will conclude at the Main Library at 50 South Fullerton Avenue from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. with many of our Montclair neighbors, writers (such as Baristanet’s own Georgette Gilmore!), local heroes and celebrities reading from the “Big Red Chair.”

  1. Where is the sign up sheet? I used to get the email, or there was a sign up link on the website. None of those are available any more. Do they only want celebrities now? Regular citizens are not invited to read any more?
