Wegmans announced plans for a Hanover store in 2014; on Sunday, the store opened to insane crowds with reports of $20,000 shoppers by 4:30 p.m. and some customers who did a sleepover — in a Winnebago in the parking lot — in order to be among the first to see the beloved chain’s new Northern New Jersey store.
It was much easier to visit on early Monday morning, when rain might have chased away some shoppers. The parking lot for Hanover’s Wegmans Food market was beginning to fill up around 9:30 a.m., but inside the store was not yet crowded. The supermarket on steroids (much like the giant swordfish we spied getting wheeled over to the fish station) is both exciting and a little overwhelming.
There are some cool features to the sprawling suburban food market, including two huge lounge areas and spaces to dine in, with options including a burger bar and specialty pizza. Interactive stations, where you could scoop your own protein powder, make your own trail mix, mix up a batch of body scrub, and of course, fill a bag of assorted candies by the pound, made shopping fun. But by 11:30, as the place was getting packed with shoppers, it felt good to step outside the 113,000 square-foot-market. Oh, and there’s a Hanover Beer, Liquor and Wine store connected to the market, if you need libations.
Will you make the trek to Hanover?
