Weekend Family Fun: Storytime, Family Art Adventure, PlayDay South Orange!

The weekend is here! Who’s excited? We’ve rounded up plenty of fun and family-friendly things to do around town and beyond to help you spend your time.

Saturday Morning Author/Illustrator Storytime continues at Watchung Booksellers (54 Fairfield Street, Watchung Plaza, Montclair). This week, author and illustrator Kristine Lombardi will present Mr. Biddles. An inventor cat and a lobster left on his doorstep – a great friendship in the making. Storytime begins at 10:30 AM.

Barnes & Noble at Clifton Commons (395 Route 3 East, Clifton) will host Princesses Wear Pants Storytime on Saturday at 11:00 AM. In their debut children’s picture book, Savannah Guthrie and Allison Oppenheim team up for a savvy, imaginative story that celebrates fashion and girl power. Join the unflappable Princess Penelope Pineapple as she finds a clever way to get the job done while staying true to herself. Activities to follow.

Celebrate National Play-Doh Day at Glen Ridge Public Library (240 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge) on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Children’s Area. They’ll supply the Play-Doh and you bring the imagination.

Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) will host their monthly Family Art Adventure from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Explore and discuss artwork and participate in a hands-on project in the studio. This activity is for children ages 6-12 and their adult companions. Reservations are not required. Cost is $18 per family for non-members and $6 per family for members.

Also on Saturday, Michaels of Clifton (348 Route 3 West, Riverfront Center, Clifton) will host a Kids Club Fall Sign workshop from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Children ages 3 and up can make a quick project. Sign up in store or online, or just drop in. Parent or guardian must remain on premises. Cost is $2 and includes supplies.

Dream Martial Arts (604 Valley Road, Montclair) will host a Family Fun Day on Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Everyone is invited to enjoy the festivities including an Open House, Bouncy Castle, a belt promotion ceremony, and a ribbon cutting with Mayor Jackson. There will also be food, music, games, and prizes. Admission is free.

PlayDay South Orange will be held on Sunday, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM across 10 play areas along and near South Orange Avenue. Back for its fourth play-filled year, PlayDay South Orange is the Village’s largest public event. From board games to basketball, radio controlled cars to rope jumping, it’s the most fun you’ve ever had between two curbs! The event is free and open to the public, however, some activities such as inflatables, zip line, euro bungee, and radio-controlled cars require a wristband which can be purchased for $10.00. On Sunday, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm (73 Kahdena Road, Morris Township) will host 1920s Country Fair & Harvest Festival from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Enjoy a fun-filled day of wagon-rides, farm animals, live music, exhibits, old-fashioned games, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and food for purchase. Cost is $8 per adult, $7 per senior (65+), $6 per child age 4-16, $4 per child age 2-3, and free for children under age 2.

Also on Sunday, the Drop-In Studio at Montclair Art Museum (3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair) returns between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The Helen & Bill Geyer Art Studio will be stocked with a range of art materials to explore with a seasoned MAM studio instructor. Open ended activities are designed to spark creativity in artists of all ages and abilities. This is free for members and included in Museum admission for non-members.
