Montclair Crime: Burglary at Saunders Hardware, Radiators Stolen From Orange Road

The week in Montclair crime from D/Lt. David O’Dowd, Montclair Police Department:


On 04/10/2014, at approx. 1623 hours, officers responded to a New Street address on a vandalism report. The caller informed officers that she found a rear first floor bedroom window on the property broken. Nothing reported missing.

On 04/10/2014, at approx. 1848 hours, officers responded to the parking lot behind 84 Pine Street on damage to a motor vehicle. The vehicle owner informed officers that he parked his 2001 Honda Civic in the lot on 4/06 at approx 0600 hours. When he returned to it on 4/10 0800 hours, the vehicle had scratches on it. Officers observed swirled scratches on the driver door and a long scratch on the hood and trunk of the vehicle. Continue Reading

Montclair Crime: Armed Robbery, Bedroom Intruder, Possible Luring, Flim-Flam Money Scam

montclair police intruder sketchPolice responded to a Pine Street apartment building (3/20, 4:50 am) on report of a possible intruder. The female caller told police she woke up to find a man standing at the foot of her bed. The man said to her, “Are you ready for me?” She screamed and the intruder is said to have casually walked out of the apartment via the back door. The intruder was described as a black male, 30-40 yrs old, with a mustache, wearing blue jeans and no shirt and some sort of head wear. The intruder reportedly did not get into the bed and did not touch the caller. The caller believes the back door to the apartment was left open at the time she retired for the evening. The caller states that she does not recognize the intruder as anyone that she knows. Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Montclair Police Detective Bureau, Det. C. Cunningham at 973-509-4716. State Police were contacted to do a composite sketch (pictured).

Montclair Crime: $86,000 Stolen By Online Dating Scammer

A Montclair resident made an online match from hell. Police took a walk in fraud report on March 5, from a Montclair resident who had met someone on Maxwell Yas was the name used and he claimed to be an American Civil engineer working in Malaysia. Over the course of several months, the victim states that Yas convinced the victim to wire him large sums of money to help him as he had been having some financial problems.

“Yas” mailed a check in the amount of $1,000,000 to the victim asking her to hold onto it for safe keeping as he was having trouble with the banks in Malaysia. This check was actually fraudulent. The victim was taken for $86,000.

Montclair police urge residents to be aware that this is a common scam conducted on the internet. Actors seek out people looking to connect on the internet. They take advantage of victims who are seeking a relationship or companionship. Once they gain a level of trust they drop some kind of tragic story that has impacted them financially and ask the victim to help. Continue Reading
