Requiem for an Organist

MessineoGlen Ridge is mourning the death of organist David Messineo, who had a fatal heart attack on Friday at the age of 43. Messineo was minister of music at the Glen Ridge Congregational Church for 16 years before moving to Princeton in 2000 to become the principal organist of Princeton University.
In his memory on Sunday, the church’s choir sang “Gaelic Blessing,” a hymn by John Rutter, who was one of Messineo’s favorite composers.
“May he rest in peace,” Rev. Stinson said of Messineo. “Well, that may not be quite right. He never ever played the organ peaceably. But may his memory, considerable talents and faithfulness to the church be hallowed in our hearts and rewarded by God.”
Messineo’s funeral will be at the Methodist Church in Milford, Pa. at 10 am Wednesday. A memorial service at the Congregational Church may be scheduled at a later date.

  1. David played the organ for my wedding back in 1989. He was a man of incredible musical talent. How sad to lose someone like that at such a young age.

  2. David Messineo was also an organist at Temple Ner Tamid a few years back. A fine musician, and ecumenical. I’m very sorry to hear this.
