The slow-moving Frances is finally shaking her wet wings over our area. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for eastern Essex County until 10:30 am. For local weather anytime, scroll down the left sidebar on Barista and click on the >> WEATHER tab.

EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM THIS STORM WILL CAUSE FLASH FLOODING OF SMALL CREEKS AND STREAMS… URBAN AREAS… HIGHWAYS… STREETS AND UNDERPASSES AS WELL AS OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW LYING SPOTS.
DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY. VEHICLES CAUGHT IN RISING WATER SHOULD BE ABANDONED QUICKLY. MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND.
A FLASH FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT OR OCCURRING. IF YOU ARE IN THE WARNING AREA MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND IMMEDIATELY. RESIDENTS LIVING ALONG STREAMS AND CREEKS SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE PRECAUTIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS SWIFTLY FLOWING WATERS OR WATERS OF UNKNOWN DEPTH BY FOOT OR BY AUTOMOBILE. IF YOUR VEHICLE STALLS, ABANDON IT IMMEDIATELY AND SEEK HIGHER GROUND

  1. “Lite” is a good one. When all the underpasses on the Parkway (okay, there are two) have completely flooded out between 148 and 145, that’s not a good thing. Talk about standstill on the Parkway.

  2. Hurricanes don’t scare me. I come from that part of the world! But, I had to go on book tour during hurricane season?
Lemme tell y’all about this Frances (name of Pat Conroy’s deceased mother, which caused him to buy batteries, move to high ground, and have nightmares) not to mention Gaston (never trust a French guy) and Charlie . . . they all seemed de riguer for hurricane season and they raised the usual hell that hurricanes do. Big blowhards, yada yada.
BUT! They were not helpful for book tour. I was there. I got soaked, stranded, rescheduled and frustrated like anyone would. Challenging to sell books when the weather service is telling you to stay home or die, the wind is blowing at over fifty miles and hour, there’s no power and the stores are closed. Some glam life!

  3. since my name is frances, i have asked friends to be on the lookout for grisly headlines featuring my name. i’ve even tried fabricating a few when the real thing wasn’t scary enough: ‘floridians doubled over in cramping dread of frances’ or ‘sickening terrors grips florida population as frances comes to visit’ capture the flavor i’m looking for.
i haven’t enjoyed headlines this much since they were promoting that movie about actress frances farmer: ‘frances: she was gorgeous, but really, really sick. nuts. out of her mind.’ well, i’m paraphrasing there a little.
