Perhaps, you’ve eaten the quintessential Mexican meal at El Cholo in Los Angeles, or loved the tableside guacamole at Zarela in Manhattan. Maybe you’ve made it to the definitive Tlaquepaque in Sedona. Or could be you experienced your favorite huevos rancheros in a roadside restaurant in Cabo or a cantina in Cancun. Having eaten at all those places, we’re back in New Jersey. We have to get our fix where we can. After hearing first bad and then good reviews for Bloomfield’s new Mexican, Senoritas, we decided to taste for ourselves. The verdict? Senoritas definitely has promise. Yes, yes, the bathrooms are beautiful, but the rest of the establishment is also attractive and huge. No risk of being crammed next to someone and listening to their dinner conversation here. The restaurant (on Glenwood Ave., next to the now defunct El Chirripo), has two floors and tons of tables. We picked up takeout, and saw only a handful of diners.

*UPDATE: Senoritas has its liquor license, serving beer, wine and sangria

Back at home, we were pleasantly surprised. Soft tacos with broiled red snapper were perfectly cooked and for $11.95, the order came with three(!) tacos, rice and black beans. Chili rellenos with beef were a spicy standout — smothered in salsa and melted jack cheese. The special of the night, chicken plancha (chicken with peppers) was not as remarkable as the side dish served with it — pinto beans with smoked bacon in a sauce redolent of cinnamon. Unlike many Mexican eateries that want to charge you for chips(!), a bag was included with our order. From the takeout/delivery menu, it appears Senoritas is trying to go head to head with Mexicali Rose in terms of delivery — service areas include Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair and Nutley. Meanwhile, we hear that their real competition might be Los Tapatios (Main Street, West Orange) previously overlooked in the past, but now gaining a devoted following.

  1. We ate there…I didn’t like it much. My partner thought it was okay and would suffice, but definitely does NOT compare to West Coast food! I got some dish that was grilled chicken w/ a sauce that was downright nasty sweet!
We need a review of Mesob – that’s a really great local restaurant (with nice bathrooms too!) that doesn’t get enough press.

  2. I ate there with my family a few weeks ago and thought it was okay. Not bad, but certainly not what I thought it could be.
The staff was very friendly, the decor lovely – can’t wait til they get their liquor license! I felt that the food was somewhat above average, although my husband thought his chimmichinga (sp?) was very good. Son was also happy with his food. I just thought there would be more pizzaz!
That being said, I am meeeting some girlfriends there for dinner tonight for drinks and apps, so hopefully my second time will be better.

  3. We’ll have to check both places out. I love Mexican food. Best mmexican food of all time is La Super Rica Taco in Santa Barbara… basically a little roadside stand with some of the best tacos I’ve ever had. Yum.

  4. We tried it last friday. It was fairly busy, and we ran into folks also trying it for the first time. We thought it was pretty good. Just what Bloomfield Center needs.

  5. We had dinner at Señorita’s last night after noticing it being open for the past few weeks. Visually it is the best thing to happen to Bloomfield center in a long time.
The place was busy, but we were seated right away. The interior is even nicer looking than the outside.
Service was really great, prices good, and food tasty. Good size portions, and no lack of chips & salsa.
    A very nice dining experience.
I hope this is going to be the trend in Blfd. center.
    P.S No problems finding parking!!!

  6. I thought this place was great – (OK, it is not like mexican that you get on the west coast) but since we are on the east coast let’s just take it from there – the food was really good, lotsa vegetarian choices, which were really tasty. The decor was really pleasant and the staff was awesome. I even met the owner who is a Bloomfield native and he was so warm and friendly he gets total respect and props for his enthusiasm. Overall, this is another great eats in Bloomfield!

  7. i thought it was mediocre at best. the food was okay. way too much sauce on the enchiladas and burrito. the atmosphere is kind of austere and cafeteria like. we find Tinga has the best mexican locally.

  8. What a wonderful restaurant to come to Bloomfield. My husband and I ate there the first week it opened. There was a mariachi band that was wonderful and the food was great. We wished them all the best of luck in Bloomfield and told them we would come back again soon. Good Luck Seniorita’s Restaurant!

  9. Are you Kidding me?? This place was outstanding. I had a chicken breast cooked in a white wine sauce, with asparagus and mushrooms. I was in Mexican heaven. My wife tried some steak with chipotle chiles, nice hickory like smoke flavor, tender and juicy. Please…try the caramel flan and fried Ice Cream(yes, fried ice cream) I was told it’s made in the premises and it was too good!!…even better, our total dinner was under $30.00

  10. Ate here for the second time last night with a bunch of gals. I brought tequila and they made fabulous pitchers of margaritas.
Service was awesome and the food was great. Try the shrimp mexicana. Yum

  11. Had lunch there yesteday with my family. Beautifully decorating – check out the bathrooms! Great service, quick to the table, good food. Nice twist on traditional items. Brought tequila and they made us margaritas. The owner is a lovely, polite young man, who has really worked his way into the business. This is great for Bloomfield and I wish him lots of luck!

  12. Finally got a chance to go here last night – and it was wonderful. This has become my new favorite place.

  13. My husband and I ate there this past Friday and I got Food Poisoning!!!
I had the vegetarian stuffed peppers.
The food was great, but…..being violently ill for 6+ hours makes us not want to eat there again.
    sorry folks!

  14. I ordered delivery from Senorita’s and it was outstandingly good. Everything tasted so fresh and perfectly seasoned. So much better than the overrated Mexicali Rose.

  15. We went to Senorita’s with one of our friend who grew up in Mexico City and makes some real kick ass Mexican food. We liked the decor and friendly service but food didn’t live up to our expectation. Perhaps I’m a Mexican food snob; I really didn’t care too much for Tinga either!
If you really like Mexican food, perhaps you can visit N. Bergen/West New York. For something closer, try El Mexicano on 1293 Main Ave in Clifton(right off Rt 46E). Or El Bandido’s in E. Orange, which unfortunately has been going steadily down hill for past 20 years that I’ve been visiting them.

  16. Went to Seniorita’s today and was really disappointed. The taco’s had this crappy sauce which made them taste like they were made with Manwhich (sloppy-joe-from-the-can). Refried beans – blaaaannnd. The margarita’s were bland too.
I’m no food snob, but this is just not good.

  17. Man, what a great place, I loved the decor, the food was incredible, I had a shrimp verde in green tomatillo sauce, the service was the best I had in years(specially at local mexican joints!) and they made me a margarita with 1800 that was out of this world. i will definetely be back!

  19. What a pleasant surprise! As a family of four with kids aged 11 and 7, we ate at Senorita’s for the first time on a Sunday night. Parking was easy and the place, which is attractively decorated, was uncrowded. The food was very good, as was the service. I had Pedrito’s steak fajitas which came with onions, peppers, cheese and a delicious sauce. Far superior to traditional fajitas. My wife had enchiladas which she enjoyed. The kids were happy with tacos and chicken fingers. My wife also liked the house pinot grigio and they have a good selection of Mexican beers. All in all, a great find. Bloomfield Center needs more places like this.

  20. Had dinner with family and a friend. Great atmosphere, very spacious, Don’t remember the bathrooms, must go back there to check them out. Anyway, we enjoyed ourselves. The food was great. This is such an asset to Bloomfield…

  21. I don’t know how anyone could say the food was bad there. I thought it was excellent and I’ve eaten there dozens of times! Every dish I’ve had was a delight and I have not had one disappointment so far. The nachos are excellent, the chicken dishes spectacular, and the fried ice cream is to die for. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the people are so friendly and helpful. It is a great place to go with family and friends and with the bar now open its even better than before. Overall I give this an A+ rating!

  22. Senorita’s is the best Mexican restaurant in the area! Love the food, decor, atmosphere and the friendly, quick and attentive service. I will definitely be going back soon and taking along a few friends.
    Great experience all around.

  23. C’mon people. Have we set the bar so low on Mexican food that Senorita’s qualifies as “good”? The meat in the tacos is too salty, the chicken in the fajitas looks and tastes like it came from a CostCo bag and the guacamole is bland as bland can be. Oh how I long for anything approximating the Mexican food found in the Mission District of San Francisco

  24. Well, you definetely sound like a food geek, more really like a geek, without much of the food!!!if you knew anything about mexican food you would know that the food from Guerrero tastes different thanm the food from Hidalgo, and off course the food from puebla is more sweet thasn spicy when compared to oaxaca. But I don’t need to tell you this cause you obviously know all this, you also know that the cheeses from oaxaca are the best in mexico, and that you could travel through 7 mexican states where the people don’t even know what an enchilada looks like or tastes like, much less a burrito or a chimichanga. Needless to say San Francisco’s regional food will always be different than New Jersey’s mexican. I don’t know what Senorita’s call themselves(as far as what type of mexican food) but I can tell you from my expertise(not just as a chef but also as a Mexican One!!) than their food tastes a lot like Puebla food with other regional influences here and there. I must also add that I know of about 12 different Mexican spices that are nearly impossible to find in the east coast that you can redily find in the west coast. So let’s take it for what it is…you want real Mexican?…you can’t handle real Mexican…but there are a few good places in Passaic that come close. However, you are probably too councious of how different you are from the people around you in Passaic to dare venture into some of these places!!

  25. I’ve had dinner at both Senorita’s and Tinga, and personally Senorita’s is better; however it doesn’t compare to real authentic Mexican food that you get at “Los Tapatios” in West Orange. A friend of mine told me about this place a couple years ago, and since i tried it i can’t go anyplace else for Mexican. This is a family-owned restaurant that has been opened for about 12 years (if i’m not mistaken.) The owner, is a really nice guy, and they are all Mexican. They give really friendly service and they have a family atmosphere. The food is all homemade, fresh and made to order. They have so much to offer on the menu, i’ve never had a dish that i did not enjoy. It’s more than safe to try all the different enchilada sauces and they have great shrimp dishes. Their guacamole is the BEST!!! They have plenty of parking in the back. I strongly reccommend this place if you know what REAL Mexican food tastes like.
