Fire On Glenridge Avenue

bayst.jpg

Last night, tips about a home on fire first came in from commuters whose train was held up near Montclair’s Bay Street station. The fire was blazing around 5 pm in the building above – home to Togetha salon and just-opened Gigi’s Bay St. Cafe.
Montclair Fire Department’s Deputy Chief John Herrmann says the fire started in a second floor apartment while the tenant was not home. Firefighters got the fire under control within approximately 15 minutes, says Herrmann, but the apartment sustained fire and smoke damage. Residents in the third floor apartment were relocated by the Red Cross, the second floor neighbors went to relatives, and both street level floors are temporarily closed. Police arrived to secure the area. There were no injuries, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

  1. This is the second fire on Glenridge Ave. in the last couple of months. What gives? Glad no one was injured, though.

  2. That’s too bad. We heard the helicopters hovering last night around 6pm, so that must be why. There were three of them and you could smell smoke nearby.

  3. A little off topic, but is Gigi’s Cafe a chain? I noticed that a Gigi’s opened near the Bloomfield train station too (where Guliani’s used to be).

  4. Yes. The Montclair Fire Dept now has three helicopters to put out these hi-rise three story fires! Where is the outrage?! Who authorized this expense?! Is Remmy riding around in one of them!?!?!?!?

  5. Two families have lost their homes. The important question is what can we do to help them, and how.
Barista, do you have any more information?
