Baristanet has learned of a shooting near the Bloomfield/East Orange border.
Debbie Galant is on the scene. Mayor Raymond McCarthy (left, in suit) has confirmed that two men were shot, and one is dead; the other is at University Hospital. The victims were shot while walking by 168 Glenwood Avenue in Bloomfield, a private residence. Reporters are all over the scene; police are taking pictures and collecting evidence, but McCarthy was not sure anyone had been apprehended.
UPDATE 5 pm. Traffic is being diverted from Linden Ave. to Maolis Ave. on Glenwood, but Watsessing Park — across the street from the crime scene — has become an unofficial press room and gathering place for the curious.
The shooting apparently took place between 3 and 4 pm. No word on a motive. Bystanders say a woman, walking with the two shooting victims, was taken in for questioning.
We also have reports that children were being dismissed from Watsessing Elementary School about the time of the shooting.

I was at the corner of Maolis and Glenwood right after it happened. Didn’t know it was a shooting, but figured it was with the amount of police that were on the scene. Scary.

I was walking my son home from school at 3:30 when all the cops began to converge.
My biggest fear THEN was that the police cars were going to run over the kids! I told one cop so and he mentioned the shooting. I, then, helped usher some kids across other streets, keeping them clear of the cop cars.
Hope they get the perpetrators and soon!!

I was driving south on Ridgewood near Linden around 3:35, and I saw two unmarked cars zooming by. Then, as I approached Midland, I saw 3 more GR cop cars.

Just received an update – the shooter is a BHS student, the 2 victims were in their early-mid 20’s. Shooter is still at large, the police know who he is. I’ve heard repots that both are dead and I’ve also heard that only one is dead.
I also heard that the altercation was over a jacket – very sad to resort to such violence.
Even scarier is that the elementary school was let out at the exact time the shooting took place – thank god there were no other injuries, but what a terrible thing for this young children to have to witness.

Latest update – the second victim was shoot in the leg and has been released from the hospital and taken for questioning.
As of now, they have not found the shooter, but know who he is – he fled on foot. Needless to say they have survillance out at his relatives houses and are doing everything they can to bring him in.
He does not live in the Watsessing section but the “middle” of town, past the high school towards the North Center.

A 21-year-old Montclair man was shot dead and another man was wounded in Bloomfield this afternoon when a third man opened fire on the two and then ran away, authorities said.
Kyle Ali was shot multiple times shortly after 3 p.m. as he was walking on Glenwood Avenue across from Watsessing Park, according to Judy Gagliano, an investigator for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Ali, who turned 21 a week ago, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also shot was Ahmad Grier, 19, of Belleville, who was treated at a local hospital and released, the investigator said.

This truly could have happened anywhere. I graduated BHS in ’94, there was no security then. Maybe now is the time for some security.

If the shooter is still at large, posting that the police have his relatives’ houses staked out doesn’t help the investigation.
The bottom line. While it may seem cool to disseminate insider information that you obtain because you are friendly with a town official, you are comprimising the investigation.
The police have a difficult enough job without having to be hindered by information being posted that may give the perpetrator or his family (who may very well be doing everything in their power to prevent law enforcement from obtaining his whereabouts) a heads up.

Lets not worry about who the suspect is. The police are doing that. When the time comes they will let you know who the shooter was when the investigation is complete. And dont fool yourself about how nice Glenwood Avenue is. There have been other shootings on that same block in last 3 years. My kids know they are not alowed to walk around the park without a parent. I dont like walking down that block and I would never do it at night. I do feal residents and walking communters from the train station would benefit in “Walking Foot Patrol Police Oficers” on Glenwood from Conger Street to the East Orange Line along the parks. If you had 2 police officers assigned on foot, that would help to deter some of the rif faff that hangs out in front the stores and residents. At least in the afternoon btwn 3pm and 8pm when kids and commuters walk home on Glenwood Ave. I know a lot of residents walk up to glen ridge to advoid Glenwood ave becuase Glen Ridge provides free transit buses to the train.
To add one more issue, the train station is under NJ Transit Police authority, Watsessing Park is patroled by Essex County Police, and Glenwood Ave is Bloomfield. If Bloomfield Cant afford to hire Foot Patrol Cops, Maybe a joint agreement btwn all 3 agenices could make that area a little safer for our children and NYC Communters that have to travel on Glenwood Avenue. Glen Ridge is a long 3 bocks up the hill from the shooting. Glen Ridge Police do a fine job patroling that town and adding more Glen Ridge officers wont make Glenwood Avenue any safer.
Glen Ridge, Bloomfield, or Montclair… This is Essex County,NJ and it is a violent place compaired to most areas of the United States. There will always be isolated incidents like the afternoon shooting no mattter how many police cars are patroling the street.
The proliferation of easily purchased illegal guns into our communities has created a terrible scourge. There was a shooting of a juvenile two winters ago on the same block over a jacket. The kid said they tried to take his jacket and he was shot in the wrist. It happens!! Now back to the Bloomfield High School. Why are the bus stops full of Students at 3:00? Broad street, Bloomfield Avenue is loaded with hundred kids taking NJ Transit buses east and south of Bloomfield. Is that ok? Just sit on Glenwood Avenue at the last street in Bloomfield and watch how many students keep walking into East Orange at 320pm. All the local kids know where thier friends live but the board of ed dont stop it. Well not on my tax dollar. My family is ready to put the 4-sale sign up before the kids hit the high school. I went to MHS and grew up in Upper Montclair and even there some kids had guns. They were idiots and I avoided them because I was raised by parents who didn’t tolerate that kind of crap. But they were in my school. This isn’t a money issue or a race issue – it’s a bad parents issue!

My husband, daughter and I moved to the Watsessing area of Bloomfield over 5 years ago.We were shown houses all over Glenridge and Northern Bloomfield but fell in love with Watsessing! I have always felt safe (or as safe as anyone can feel in these times) and am proud to send my child to Watsessing School. We are part of a community that is diverse economically, racially and ethically. In other words we are part of the real world. I wish people who live in other parts of Bloomfield would stop passing judgement on their Watsessing neighbors. It serves no purpose other than to perpetuate stereotypes. The February 28 Community Briefing at the Montclair Fire Department Headquarters saw full house attendence by community members from the neighborhood areas of Bloomfield Avenue to Walnut Street and Grove to Baldwin Streets. Residents came out to hear Fourth Ward Councillor Sandra Lang, Chief of Police David Sabagh and other members of the Montclair Police Department talk about crime prevention efforts in the community and throughout Montclair.
Among the topics discussed was Neighborhood Watch – a voluntary “self-help” crime prevention effort centered around the community and local law enforcement working together for the safety and protection of the neighborhood. North/South has been a problem in Bloomfield for about forever.
Snobbish people are not limited to one end of town.
I own a smallish house on the “north” end of town and I can’t tell me how many times people from the “south” end have bragged about the size of their house and how they would never live in the north end in a shoebox etc.
As you are proud that your child attends Watsessing, parents are proud that their kid sattend all 7 of the other schools. But if someone from OV said “I’m proud my child attends OV school” they’d be branded a snob.

Your daughter is an A student at Watsessing school. So what? Lots of kids are A students in grammar school. Check back with us when shes in middle and high school. BTW, I have one who was an A student and one who is a C student. I don’t love the C student any less nor am I any less proud of him for his accomplishments. A decorated Newark police sergeant was killed early yesterday when his car flipped over while he was pursuing another police vehicle, which had been commandeered by its handcuffed occupant.
Sgt. Tommaso Popolizio, 33, was taken to University Hospital with massive head injuries from the crash, which occurred around 4 a.m. on Doremus Avenue. He was pronounced dead at 5:55 a.m., a hospital spokesman said.
The fleeing suspect was captured soon after the crash.
Popolizio, an East District supervisor who had received numerous accolades during his 12 years on the force, had responded with other officers to reports of drag racing along Doremus Avenue, an industrial stretch in the city’s Ironbound section with a long history of illegal street races.
There police arrested 22-year-old William Rodriguez of Cranbury, who was seen discarding a handgun, police said. When Rodriguez, left by himself in a parked police cruiser, managed to drive off with it, Popolizio pursued. The two vehicles collided and Popolizio’s SUV overturned.
Popolizio, a married father of four, was the first Newark police officer to die in the line of duty since Special Police Officer Dwayne Reeves was shot in July 2005 while breaking up a fight outside Weequahic High School.
At a morning news conference outside University Hospital, Mayor Cory Booker called the Newark native a hero and said the entire city will mourn his death.
“Our community is in grief at the loss of one of our courageous and dedicated leaders,” Booker said. “Sergeant Popolizio died in the line of duty and gave his life in service of our city and our nation’s highest ideals.”
Popolizio was one of three brothers from an Italian-American family who grew up in the city’s North Ward and later became city cops. He was the first to join the force, rising in the ranks as he developed a reputation for bravery and dedication.
Popolizio’s brother Nicola died in December of a heart attack. The third brother, officer Pasquale Popolizio, is an eight-year veteran of the force.
“This is really hard for us,” said their sister, Rosetta Tominovich. “He was just so family-oriented. He really loved people.”
COLLISION NEAR JAIL
Authorities said Rodriguez was found hiding in the tall grass along Doremus Avenue not far from the crash site. He was taken to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, treated for minor injuries and released to police custody.
Rodriguez, who has a long criminal record, has been charged with aggravated manslaughter, auto theft, eluding police, resisting arrest, escape and gun charges.
The incident unfolded just before 4 a.m., when Popolizio and other officers responded to reports of drag racing on Doremus Avenue, a desolate straightaway that runs past container yards and chemical factories.
When Popolizio and the other officers arrived, they stopped a car that was attempting to flee the scene. As they approached the vehicle, they saw Rodriguez toss a handgun out the window, said Detective Todd McClendon, a police spokesman.
Rodriguez was arrested and placed in the back seat of an unmanned police cruiser, his hands cuffed behind his back, McClendon said. But as he waited to be taken away, Rodriguez managed to maneuver his cuffed hands to the front of his body and squeeze himself through the plastic partition separating the back and front seats.
Once in the front seat, Rodriguez got behind the wheel and drove off. Popolizio and several other officers gave chase. Seconds later, not far from the front gates of the Essex County jail, Popolizio’s marked SUV collided with the cruiser Rodriguez was driving. Popolizio was partially ejected from the SUV as it flipped over, police said.
Rodriguez continued driving south on Doremus Avenue but abandoned the cruiser near the Newark Bay Bridge, a short distance away. He was taken back into custody by police of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, who found him hiding in the weeds beneath the bridge, authorities said.
Rodriguez’s criminal record includes nine previous arrests and four felony convictions, McClendon said.
Police have launched an investigation into how he managed to work his cuffed hands from behind his back and take control of the vehicle.
“The suspect caused this,” said Capt. John Chrystall III, president of the Superior Officers Association, which represents Newark’s police sergeants and captains. “We’re going to ensure this suspect is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Drag racing on Doremus Avenue and nearby Avenue P has long been a problem for Newark police. In 2005, police conducted a massive bust on Avenue P, towing more than 130 cars and arresting seven people.
East Ward Councilman Augusto Amador said aggressive patrols after the bust seemed to stem the tide of racers descending on the city.
“The police kind of kept a very close eye, kept monitoring the situation,” Amador said. Yesterday’s activity, he said, “might be an isolated case, because the police had been doing a perfect job in that area.”
Popolizio was described by union officials as an “aggressive supervisor” and “excellent officer.” A graduate of Barringer High School, he joined the force in 1995 and made his mark almost immediately, chasing down a trio of homicide suspects after he and his partner heard gunshots on their way home from their shift. Popolizio was fired upon during the chase and later received an award from the city for his valor.
Four years later, in 1999, he was heralded again after he and another officer rescued three children from a fire on Sunset Avenue. The pair had been dispatched to deal with a complaint of illegal dumping, but spotted the burning building along the way. They rushed inside and carried out the children.
“I try to do as much as I can every day that I go out there,” Popolizio told The Star-Ledger at the time.
As a supervisor, Popolizio was known as a “gentleman” who graciously led officers under his command, FOP Lodge No. 12 President Derrick Hatcher said.
Police Director Garry McCarthy said, “Today, not only have we lost a friend and a hero, but a true leader by example who gave his life ensuring the safety and protection of the residents of this city.”

Hi Shitalker, actually your comment was not the one I was referring to, yours was good-humored. It was one of the “hiding” comments about her being “educated.” And a more general comment also about some of the other posts lately, especially the vituperative (if I spelled that right) ones such as saying the south end of Bloomfield should be annexed to EO and some of the racial comments that have been popping up recently. All this crap posted as a result of a shooting. Regardless of race, or area you reside in Bloomfield, there are cetrain issues that should be looked into. First of all, the school system should follow up on complaints about residency of students. It’s time to address the problem issues and stop hiding them. Bloomfield is a nice town. Even with the homeless sleeping on park benches at the Conger Street Curb. Even with the occasional pan handler at Quick Check or Dunkin Donuts. Even with hammer striking youths driving in cars. And Even with a shooting on Glenwwod Avenue. Stop blaming race for our society problems. Maybe better parenting from all races could help solve some of the issues this blog was initialy started for, “A shooting”… It’s not a race war or Brookdale vs Watessing Hts. Where are your teenagers tonight? Where will they be Friday and Saturday Night? How much weed do they smoke? How many blunts are purchased by juvenile females every night? Stores cant keep the shelves stocked. Do they like cigar smoke? Wow I would ground my daughter for a month if I found a cigar wrapper in her car. I can keep going. We were all kids at one time and my parents never knew what I was doing. They thought they did. I know that most of you that have older children dont know half of what they do. “He’s a good boy” “He was a good kid” “My daughter would never do that”… Well the mother of the “Sun Glasses Bandits” (juvenile female bank robbers) stated her daughter was a bright kid. So bright she hid her face with sun glasses and robbed a bank and got arrested for possesion of narcotics. Lets go parants, get involved with your children, schools, and community. My peoples, My people, yeh yeh every race and ethnic background had conflicts through out history. If we are going to dwell on something 100 years old, then the entire human race would be wiped out. The only king I know is me and the only throne I must go to at once is is my bathroom. We never had kings in the United States only presidents. Im an American. I could care less about my past where my ancestors came from. That isnt going to pay my bills. And Im half black and half white, half jewish and half babtist. Im not angry at the world.
