Bloomfield Business Owner Owns Up To Crime

Former state trooper Hiram Ortiz, 43, owner of Bloomfield’s Avenue Steakhouse, (formerly Scores Sports Cafe) plead guilty yesterday to a second occupation: fencing jewelery and fancy watches worth $1.27 million, received from a multi-state smash-and-grab theft ring. Ortiz will be sentenced in January, facing steep fines and 10 years in prison. From NJ.com:

Ortiz admitted receiving the stolen Rolexes and reselling them. The heists took places in malls in Paramus, Rockaway and Bridgewater, as well as in Pennsylvania, Georgia and Florida.

Ortiz also faces unrelated charges in New York on which he may stand trial later this year.

  1. He’s identified as a former state trooper, dannyboor, not a current one. And there’s probably good reason why at 43 he no longer has a badge. So try and contain your usual rush to judgment here.

  2. Ahhh I get it. You’re saying the badge was the only thing keeping his criminalistic nature at bay and upon handing it in, the urges now being unhindered by the automatic saint-like persona one takes when donning a badge, were too much to resist and they got the better of him.
Or perhaps he is just suffering from an erosion of common sense, logic, and decency which, as you suggest by mentioning his age, comes with age as if it played some part in justifying his heinous behavior which you so ably exhibit on a daily basis.
I’m becoming increasingly uncomfortable by this apparent hard-on you have for me, Crankypants.

  3. Officer Ortiz,
Yeah..I remember this guy pulled me over on the Turnpike, he said I was speeding. I asked him how much the Ticket would be?
He asked me what kind of watch I was wearing, and asked me if I would be interested in donating it to the PABA. You know, that organization the calls your home asking for donations so the officers can have a recreational club room for playing cards, hookers, beer, etc.. So I gave him the Watch.

  4. Dannyboor, you go on so about age. Do you envy the wisdom that comes with some experience? Or is it just that you enjoy soiling yourself in public here? Either way, you never come off as much more than an exceptionally petulant child.
But keep at it, kid. Perhaps some day one of your “pair’ may even descend.

  5. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t This the same guy who was arrested for running an escort service in NY several years ago?

  6. Ortiz also faces unrelated charges in New York on which he may stand trial later this year.
Manhattan prosecutors last year charged him with money laundering, accusing him of involvement in an elite call-girl operation.
The ring was allegedly run by Paul Bergrin, a former federal prosecutor and prominent New Jersey defense attorney. Authorities said Ortiz laundered funds for the escort service by running phony credit car purchases through his tavern.
Bergrin and Ortiz have denied those charges.

  7. “Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t This the same guy who was arrested for running an escort service in NY several years ago?”
Well, he once escorted a steak to my table.
