DV8 Takes On Homophobia

You can always expect to savor the unusual at Peak Perfomances. “To Be Straight With You” a tri-state premiere performed by DV8 Physical Theatre this week in Montclair takes a searing look at intolerance, religion and sexuality. Based on hundreds of hours of audio interviews with people in the U.K., DV8‚Äôs founder Lloyd Newson delves into the world of homophobia in the Afro-Caribbean and Islamic communities. Incorporating dance, text, documentary, animation and film, this work is fast, athletic and exciting to watch. This intense work brings uncomfortable yet timely issues in your face with powerful dialogue, dance and true stories.

Today’s NY TImes takes a look at DV8’s production and its first U.S. appearances in 15 years.

Performances are Oct. 2, 3 at 7:30 pm; Oct. 4 at 8pm; Oct. 5 at 3pm. The production is co-produced by Maison des Arts de Créteil, the Festival d’Automne in Paris and the National Theatre in London, where it will have an extended run following its Montclair performances.
