Closed!

Local post office windows closed early today, without any posted explanations, leaving customers in their lobbies confused and angry. The Glen Ridge Post Office was closed at 1 pm, and postal employees working in the back, when summoned by the lobby buzzer, said they were told by the district to close early. Bloomfield Post Office windows were also closed more than three hours prior to their posted 7 pm closing time. A sign posted on the door in Bloomfield warned of changed hours on Dec. 31, Jan. 1 and Jan. 2, but nothing on Dec. 26. We have inquired with the USPS newsroom and will post any official explanations we receive.

  1. Just before 1 PM, I was at the Watchung PO. After I handed some overseas mail to the clerk, he walked around and locked the front door to entry. I knew that they closed for lunch from 1:30 to 2:30, but this seemed a tad early. I guess there is more to it. Glad I got there when I did.

  2. ALL post office closed early today, along with Dec 24th. I work in Jersey City and we had 7 signs all over the post office allerting customers to this fact. PLEASE do not give such bad press to us, I cant believe those offices didn’t have signs. The early close is also in effect for new years eve.

  3. FedEx and UPS are not run by the gubmint. What was the reasoning behind early closure for Dec. 26? Not criticizing, just asking.

  4. Went to buy stamps at the Montclair Post office on Glen Ridge Avenue on Tuesday. Line was over an hour long (as was told by a few pissed off patrons). There is no machine to buy stamps there. Just another incompetent government service I suppose. Went to CVS to pick up my holiday photo cards and they sold stamps their at cost. Will never step foot inside that disaster of a post office ever again, unless they somehow lose an important package of mine (happened twice). Did you ever try to call them? Fuggedabout it!

  5. All bill payments are done online…
All Christmas gifts were bought online and shipped to me or friends/family.
All stamps are bought at CVS, Shop Rites etc..
I no longer use the USPS.

  6. My customers want my work the next day. I gave up on USPS years ago, always having to put out tracers when the packages were late. Now I only ship Fed Ex. The only thing I send thru the Post Office is my Xmas cards.

  7. For Saturday mornings, Glen Ridge is an ideal post office. It’s cozy and the staff is helpful. Great mural, too.

  8. I looked up on Wikipedia to see if there was some special celebration today that would result in the USPS closing early. While there were many events, both notable and tragic, the only significant event was that, on this day in 1919, Babe Ruth was traded from the Red Sox to the Yankees. Seems reason enough to celebrate, eh?

  9. USPS employees deserve all the early closings they can get! You can’t even imagine the workload they carry. My 54 year old father is a letter carrier in Bloomfield and worked every day this past week including Xmas eve and the 26th. He barely had time to eat lunch this week and has been handling a volume of packages that in the past would have been the responsibility of 3 people. When he finishes his own route, he’s expected to help finish up other routes, something that used to count as over-time, but isn’t offered anymore.
That said, don’t forget the holiday tip for your letter carrier!

  10. Glad this was posted, as I too was surprised to be in the lobby of the Glen Ridge Post office at 1 pm and not able to mail a package. I could see the workers in the back. I went home and called FED EX, – they picked it up by 7 pm. Also noticed today that my mail was delivered at home before noon! A First! I usually see my mail carrier parked on the street for hours on a Saturday – looks like he is taking a rest in his little tart cart, while earning OT. Perhaps a sub was covering his route today, or maybe, just maybe he was motivated to finish his work on time so he could go home and nap!
