When I was in high school I made my prom dresses. So did my sisters. So did all my friends. We would see each other on Saturday afternoons at Swezey’s in the sewing department, picking out Simplicity patterns for 65 cents and remnants of pinwale corduroy for 90 cents. A half a yard would make a great pair of culottes.

So I was delighted to see that Fern Bass, who who offers a variety of art and sewing classes at her Park Street studio, is offering a Prom Dress Making Workshop from March 27 through May 13. Instructor Fabiola Arias is an accomplished designer and sewer and will teach enrollees how to construct gorgeous and original prom gowns. Marilyn and Jim Stavros over at I’ve Got A Notion in Watchung Plaza, also offer a variety of great sewing classes, not to mention a rainbow array of trims, lace, sequins, feather boas, taffeta, organdy, satin, zippers, buttons and more. Sewing is fun, relaxing, creative and once you learn how, it can be a great money saver too.

  1. You can buy nice prom dresses from goodorient. There are so many prom dresses to choose from goodorient & the price is rather affordable. It’s surprisingly great. Material feels great; the dress feels solid, nothing flimsy. They have a lot of designs. Anyone else want to share where they got their’s from?
Here is one example:This dress costs $118.98
