I’m no Meme Roth. I believe that a cupcake now and then is part of life’s pleasures, but I do agree that eating healthy, non-processed foods is important. I can control what my kids eat at home, but what about what they eat at school? Slow Food USA wants to get healthy, real food served in our schools and has launched a campaign called Time For Lunch to do just that.
Time For Lunch is collecting signatures on a petition that will go to Congress before the Child Nutrition Act, a bill that governs the National School Lunch Program, is up for reauthorization this fall. They would like the following five changes made to the lunch program:

  1. Invest in children’s health
  2. Protect against food that puts children at risk.
  3. Teach children healthy habits that will last through life.
  4. Give schools the incentive to buy local.
  5. Create green jobs with a School Lunch Corps.

Another part of the campaign is designating Monday, September 7, National Eat-In Day, which is a potluck that takes place in public and gathers people to support a cause – like getting real food into schools. Find out where you can attend an Eat-in in Baristaville…

  1. Georgette, Maybe those two cupcakes you left at my house last weekend could be considered slow food. They were homemade weren’t they? Well, they were delicious. I owe you some cupcakes!

  2. I’m glad you enjoyed the cupcakes I left! They were not homemade, but bought form a yummy bakery in town.
And when you’re ready to pay me back in cupcakes, my favorites are chocolate with chocolate frosting or red velvet. 🙂
