lostcat2.jpgFrom a concerned reader in Montclair:

I’ve attached a picture of a cat who appeared on my porch last week and again this past weekend. I gave her some food and she seemed quite hungry. She has no identifying tags. I live on Madison Street and the cat has also been seen around Lorraine, Carteret and Midland avenues. I am determined to find the owner or I will have to bring her to a shelter.

If this is your cat, or you know whose cat it is, please email pets@baristanet.com

  1. The cat isn’t emaciated, so he/she is probably someone’s pet that got loose.
I hope kitty is reunited with owner.
I might be interested in adopting if owner can’t be located.

  2. Montclair has a both Lorraine and Midland avenues.
That is a cute cat and I agree, it doesn’t look like she’s been lost too long. Hope the owner sees the photo.

  3. Yes, MM, but they’re nowhere near each other. Madison, Lorraine, Carteret and Midland are all in the same Glen Ridge neighborhood.

  4. I’ve emailed the person who found her. She hasn’t answered me back yet; let’s see what she says.

  5. I live near those GR streets, maybe the kitty will show up by my house and I’ll snag her. My wife said she will allow me to have one more cat so I hope this is a female. I have 4 males right now and I don’t want to break up any more fights. I’m getting too old for that kind of s**t.

  6. Are the males fixed, MB? That could be a disaster if they’re not, with them all fighting over the female.

  7. He looks just like my cat— well about 20 pounds ago. I got a fat one– sorry– he just looked at me– he’s fit for what he does: lying around the house all day.
Hope this little one gets home.

  8. They are all neutered but a couple were not neutered until later in life, they were stray ‘toms’ already steeped in battle and territoriality. I’m hoping they would not be too agressive towards a female.
A real cat fight is terrifying, especially when one is happening in your living room!

  9. All my cats are over 10 now so they are ‘retired’, mostly from the fighting life. The do have the occasional spat that sometimes escalates into one of them going into the ‘time out’ room (my office) for an hour or so.
I have one cat that will be leaving this earth in a year or so. I want to make sure I don’t get to low on felines…

  10. If i’m not mistaken there is a sign on a tree at Maolis/Midland w/ this missing cat on it… I saw it just last week. If i remember i’ll check it on my way home today. (reason i remember is that i cringed at somebody nailing something into a tree)

  11. She (are you sure it’s a she) looks to be in good shape judging from the picture. It might not be lost at all. Sadly, too many people believe cats should be outside and let them out even with no ID. Most cats are always ready for a meal. One of my neighbors had a cat that would show up on my porch to eat what I put out for my ferals. He always ate like he hadn’t seen food in days.
If this little one is lost I hope she finds her people soon and stays indoors where she belongs. If not, Mellon you’re a good man – but if you need another cat and don’t get this one please visit the Bloomfield/Bukowski Animal Shelter. We have some beautiful femals (spayed, tested, vaccinated) in need of good homes ASAP, if you know what I mean.

  12. To Mellon,
You are a good man, and to offer another suggestion like Karen did, if you’re low on cats, try Friends of Homeless Animals. I just got my third cat, Smokey, from the ladies there, and what a sweetheart!
Take a look at who they have available:
    https://members.petfinder.com/~NJ437/index.htm
Cats and kittens can be met at FoHA adoptions at PETCO in Clifton, Rt. 3 West on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays, or by private appointment. Check our calendar or contact us at 888-224-7045.
Linda (the lady I got Smokey from) is great! Can’t recommend her enough!

  13. Sweet,
Yeah, I shop at that Petco to pick up Yesterday’s News litter, usually 4 30 lb bags at a time and I’ve seen the kitties there. I totally would love to get a kitten. All my cats were adults when we brought them in (3 rescues and one adoption). Maybe I’ll stop by on Sunday and have another look or at least put a few bucks in their bucket.

  14. Several years ago I found a female calico cat cowering in a pile of leaves on my street. It was terrified and let me put her in a cat carrier. I took her to the emergency vet for a ‘look see’ just in case she had been hit by a car or something.
She was in good health and had been spayed, so I put up some signs around the neighborhood. The one I posted at Giuliani’s Breakfast shop by the Bloomfield Train Station got a hit.
I talked to a woman who was certain this was her cat so she, her husband and kid came by on; get this, Halloween to pick up kitty.
The cat was staying in my office and decided she liked the back of my closet and when the husband came upstairs to have a look I said, “Go on, she’s in the back of the closet, you can go in there and get there”. The look of uncertainty on his face was priceless. There must have been several thoughts going on at once. “Is there really a cat back there?”. “Is this guy some kind of kook who’s going to lock me in his closet?”. Etc.. I almost burst out laughing but managed to keep my composure.
He eventually walked into the closet – it’s a deep one – and retrieved the cat which was, indeed, theirs. They wrote me a check for the vet expenses and went on their way.
I had started to get attached to the kitty and was sorry to see her go, but I’ll never forget the look on they guy’s face when I told him to go ahead and get his cat out of my closet., on Halloween.

  15. Before you take this kitty, Mellon, Mrs. M. will need to inspect your home, interview your employer and see your tax returns.

  16. Wasn’t there a lost cat picture & notice posted on a tree on Midland, down by Lorraine & Madison?

  17. I do hope this little guy finds a home- remember PAWS has many nice cats and older kittens all in need of great homes. We do adoption events at Petco in Verona, West Orange, and we do adoptions by appointment as well.

  18. This appears to be the cat I am feeding on Chestnut Hill Place. No wonder he (I believe it is a he) doesn’t look undernourished.

  19. Mellon,
I’m sure the ladies would appreciate your donation. As far as the kitten goes, be careful what you wish for! 🙂 I adopted two older cats (6 & 12 years) and one as a kitten, and I would never adopt another kitten. Yes, she was cute (still is), but Lord, what a crazy kitten she was! Used to scale me like I was a cat tree, swing from the drapes, and dash around the house at 3:30 in the morning like she was on fire. At six now, she has finally come into her own and her personality is finally fully developed. It was a long 6 years! Best of luck!

  20. Mellon, please support your local animal shelter (Bloomfield/Bukowski)! It’s open to the public 7 days/week from 1-4 PM.
Seriously, much as I love seeing our wonderful cats going to good homes (their lives are on the line unlike those at HAAL and PAWS) I am very happy to know about any animal being adopted from any shelter or rescue. There is always a need for another empty cage.

  21. Jimmy, you’ll soon learn that Baristanet is guaranteed to provide amazing full coverage on 2 topics:

  22. Mellon,
Weren’t you looking for some cats? Seems as though PAWS needs a foster posted this home for some cats… (would’ve posted this under article done today for PAWS, but I wanted Mellon to see it.)

  23. Neutered male cats don’t get into fights over females, at least in my considerable experience with varying combinations of multiple felines.
Territoriality, dealing with newcomers & establishing the new pecking (clawing?) order are different issues, of course, & their consequences are considerably more unpredictable.
We recently adopted a new kitteh from a local shelter – she’s #7 in the house – and the introductions are the most, shall we say, protracted we’ve ever experienced. She’s rather high strung & prone to attacking all of the others, male & female.
Good luck MellonB in increasing your brood!
