A man who was almost robbed ended up being the one police carried off in handcuffs. On Monday, March 1, around 9 p.m., police responded to an attempted robbery on Pine Street. At first the man was reluctant to tell police what happened and said, “I told them I didn’t want the police.” He finally told police that he “walked by a small car and two guys jumped out of the car and pulled out a gun on me.”
When the officer asked what the gun looked like, the man continued to give them a difficult time, telling them that he knows what a gun looks like. The officers then asked if it was a revolver or a semiautomatic, but instead of answering the question, the man said, “I could have taken care of it myself. I could be just as violent as them.”
Police quickly asked if he had weapons on him and the man put his hands in his pocket and gestured that he had a gun. Officers tried to take control and grabbed his arms, but the man resisted and threw his elbow backwards, hitting one of the officers in his right cheek. Once handcuffed, police found a multipurpose tool with three blades in the handle. The man was then taken to Montclair police station.

  1. Judging by the story, it would seem not.
I wonder what the guy was on that he a) gave the cops such a hard time and b) was stupid enough to tell two police officers that he had a gun when he apparently didn’t.

  2. Questioned by police, arrested for a multi-tool in his pocket? I’m surprised the “thrown elbow” wasn’t classified as aggravated assault, and the multi-tool as possession of a burglary tools. Disorderly conduct? I’d be pretty pissed if I was just mugged or robbed. He made it clear he didn’t want to talk to police, but it looks like that choice doesn’t exist anymore.
