Montclair Police Blotter: Gun-Toting Teen on Bus, Drug Bust, Strong Arm Robbery

Lt. Scott Buehler, of the Montclair Police Dept., shares the following:
Gun Arrest: On 6/2/10 at approximately 3:40 p.m., police received a call from a passenger on the New Jersey Transit 29 bus who believed that one of the other passengers was in possession of a handgun. According to the caller, he observed a black juvenile female placing the weapon in a white sock, before placing the sock and weapon in a backpack. Police stopped the bus in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Gates Avenue, where they located a juvenile matching the description provided by the caller. Further investigation revealed a sock on top of the contents of the opened backpack. Inside the sock was a loaded Raven Arms 25 caliber handgun.The juvenile, a 16-year-old East Orange female, was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters. She was charged with possession of a handgun and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose. She was later remanded to the Essex County Youth House.
Drug Arrest: On 6/2/10 at approximately 6:20 p.m., police stopped a Pontiac Sunfire in the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Hartley Street after observing that the vehicle’ s inspection sticker had expired and that driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Further investigation revealed that the driver, Peter Sbarro, 18, of Livingston, was in possession of 10 glassine folds containing heroin. In addition, a package of E-Z Widers rolling papers was found inside the vehicle. Sbarro was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of a school, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a park. He was also issued motor vehicle summonses for failure to wear a seatbelt, failure to inspect, uninsured motor vehicle, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. Bail was set at $10,000.


Strong Arm Robbery: On 6/2/10 at approximately 10:10 p.m., police responded to Washington Street on a report of a strong arm robbery. The victim, a 31-year-old Montclair male, stated that he was walking on Hartley Street when he was approached by three males. He reported that two of the males blocked the sidewalk in front of him while the third male proceeded to push him against a parked motor vehicle and punched him in the left cheek. The suspect then took the victim’s cell phone and ran north on Hartley Street. The cell phone is described as a silver T-Mobile Motorola flip phone.
The suspects are described only as follows:
Suspect # 1) thin black male wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.
Suspect # 2) thin black male wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.
Suspect # 3) heavyset black male wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants.

Theft: On 6/2/10 at approximately 5:15 p.m., police responded to the area of Star Seed Yoga & Wellness on Glenridge Avenue on a report of a theft. According to the victim, she attended a class at the establishment at approximately 4 p.m. Prior to the class, the victim left her purse and shoes on a shelf in a common hallway. At the conclusion of the class at approximately 5 p.m., she went to retrieve her belongings and discovered that her purse was missing. The purse, a brown H & M purse valued at $50, contained a black Sony Erickson cell phone valued at $100, a pink Fossil wallet valued at $20,various identification cards and keys, and $2 cash. There are no suspects at this time.

  1. Wow; I was a passenger on the 29 yesterday shortly before that time. What safety and fun on NJ Transit. As for the woman who lost her phone and more at Starseed, why would she leave any valuables on “a common shelf.” Even Montclair yoga folk can be stealthy!
    I, of course, prefer Qi Gong.
