UPDATE: We have our winners.
Maplewood/South Orange is so rich in stage and musical talent that it’s often joked that Broadway sleeps here. In fact it’s estimated that more professional theatre artists per capita live in this neighborhood than in any other NYC suburb.
The South Orange Performing Arts Center’s (SOPAC) new resident theater company, The Midtown Direct Rep, is providing a theatrical home for works directed, written and acted by seasoned Broadway performers living in Maplewood/South Orange. Broadway stars with credits in shows like “Billy Elliot”, “Chicago” and “Wicked” will take to the SOPAC stage, including Tony Award nominee Christiane Noll (Ragtime) and Charlie Pollock (9 to 5).
“Midtown Direct Rep was formed because there’s an incredible amount of theater talent that has chosen to make their homes in this area, and we wanted to be able to do great work with other professionals within our own community at a state of the art facility like SOPAC,” said Jeremy Dobrish, Midtown Direct Rep Co-Artistic Director.
The first Midtown Direct Rep production, a staged reading of “Rated P,” comes with the advisory “may not be suitable for prospective parents.” The sketch comedy about parenthood celebrates the wonder and lunacy of raising kids from conception to college. It’s written by Maplewood resident, actor, comedienne and improvisation queen, Sandy Rustin with music and lyrics by Dan Lipton and David Rossmer. Its cast of Broadway stars include Michelle Federer (Wicked) and David Josefsberg (Alter Boyz).
The second production is “The Girl in the Frame,” a fast-paced musical comedy and sexy parable of modern love written by Jeremy Desmon and starring Becky Gulsvig (Legally Blonde), David Josefsberg, Christiane Noll and Charlie Pollock.
