Author of Mickey Mantle Bio at Berra Museum

UPDATE: We have a contest winner. Congratulations sewsewsoso!

It’s October and the Yankees are hot stuff again. Perfect timing to meet author Jane Leavy, whose new book, The Last Boy: Mickey Mantle and the End of America’s Childhood is already getting enormous raves (it’ll be reviewed in this Sunday’s Times Book Review by Keith Olbermann). Leavy will be at the Yogi Berra Museum on Thursday, 10/14 at 7:30 p.m. and will be discussing her research and fascination with Mantle.

Drawing on more than five hundred interviews with friends and family, teammates, and opponents, Leavy’s book delivers the definitive account of Mantle’s life, mining the mythology of The Mick for the true story of a luminous and illustrious talent with an achingly damaged soul. “I believe in memory, not memorabilia,” Leavy writes in her preface. But in The Last Boy, she discovers that what we remember of our heroes—and even what they remember of themselves—is only where the story begins.
