Gina’s Bakery – a branch of the longtime Montclair favorite on Walnut Street – opens its doors today at 358 Millburn Avenue. Stop by from 12-5 p.m. for free samples of cookies and bread.
Gina’s is known for its artisan breads (some of the area’s finest), croissants, pastries and fruit pies. The chocolate chunk banana bread pudding and the jalapeno-cream cheese mini corn muffins are both insanely delicious.
Recently, Gina’s developed a loyal following among customers at the Millburn Farmer’s Market, who kept asking owner Gene Walters when he would open a store in their town.
The Millburn location will carry all the items that have satisfied Montclair-area customers over the years, along with some new additions. “We’re always coming out with new products,” says owner Gene Walters.

Splurge Bakery, a multicolored temple to baked goods, quietly opened a few weeks ago at 105 Main Street, conveniently situated across from Taylor Park. Owner Julie Winer originally made her name with her unique, personalized sugar cookie business. But the new retail space offers much more.
A cozy front area features a wide array of cakes, brownies, cookies, cupcakes and other specialty desserts (don’t miss the whoopee pies or the chocolate chip cookie cake). Unique to this bakery are Winer’s “Baby Cakes,” mini one-layer cakes that are “prettier than a slice” and a welcome change from the ubiquitous cupcake.
Splurge also boasts a spacious, open kitchen that is the site of kids’ birthday parties and cooking and baking classes for children and grown-ups. Finally, the bakery carries a selection of gifts, party favors and home baking supplies.
Winer set out to locate the perfect spot in Millburn two years ago, and it seems as though she’s found it. During my recent visit, a curious passerby wandered in to look around. Her verdict: “This is a tough town, but I think you have a winner here.”
Splurge will celebrate its grand opening on December 4 and 5, with samples, tastings and activities for kids.
