The 2011 Essex County Wrestling Tournament will kick off tonight, Friday (Jan. 28) at Essex County Codey Arena in West Orange at 6 p.m. This is the first time the high school tournament will be held in the county facility, which received a complete makeover in 2005. The tournament will end on Saturday (Jan. 29). The matches start on Saturday at 9 a.m. and the medal round starts at 2 p.m.
Comedian Samantha DeRose will host Piano’s Reach for the Stars Cabaret from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 28. Comedians, Doug Adler, Jim Hill, Paul Kelleher, Chris Lamberth, and Mike Warsaw will be performing at Piano’s along with the acoustic sound of Jersey’s own Andrew Lange. Fabulous Karma is bringing the first 2011 fashion fix with “Skirts in the Streets” on Sunday (Jan. 30) at the LOFT in Montclair. The event will feature designers offering a creative spin on the fashion industry, live music, dancing, the area’s best vendors, and much more. Hosted by the Two Headed Monsters, the event features up-and-coming designers Asha Renee, Ms. Ife, Spaghetti & Lipgloss, and Qaysean “Arrogant” Williams. Performers include Jack Fuller, N.E.W.S Cast, Big Osh, Hunter Brae, Amanda Lustbader, U.A.B Youth Recording Artists, B.A.N.G, Nick Giampino, Ron Difrenza, Mikhail Mendoza, Andrew Roman, and A.T. Hunte. There will be live painting by renowned artist Baja Ukweli and artwork by Bojana Coklyat. Photography services will be provided by King Boyett and Akintola Hanif.

Parents Who Rock’s Sock Monster will be bringing their brand of high-energy, alternative rock ‘n’ roll to Tierney’s (136-138 Valley Road, Montclair) this Saturday, Jan. 29 at 9 p.m. The quartet, featuring John Paul Uva on guitar and vocals, Jim Kvoriak on guitar and vocals, Bob Terhune on bass and vocals, and Andy Yeates on drums, plays a mix of covers from the power pop, alternative and punk genres, including The Kinks, the Clash, the Replacements, Squeeze, Old 97s, and Elvis Costello. On Sunday, January 30, 3 p.m., local performers and composers with Essex County’s new jersey arts collective will present a program in celebration of the IonisatioN new music ensemble’s 10th anniversary. The concert will feature the music of Leonard Bernstein, Steve Reich, George Walker, Charles Wuorinen and Charles Ives with special performances by local percussionist Peter Jarvis and the Glen Ridge Congregational Church under the direction of Thomas Mustachio and featuring a rare full-scale performance of Terry Riley’s monumental work, In C. The concert will be at the Westminster Arts Center, 449 Franklin Street, Bloomfield. Tickets are $15 for Adults and $10 for Students and Seniors.
