Camp Highlight: Magic For Muggles

Magic for Muggles is a Harry Potter fan’s dream. Taught by Kevin McCarthy and Adam Scribner, veteran teachers of social studies and science at Glenfield Middle School in Montclair, who are both big fans of Harry Potter. Held in the very gothic looking meeting hall of St. John’s Church in Montclair, Magic for Muggles camp has been creating the Hogwarts School right here in Montclair for the past five years.

Campers are divided into Hogswarts houses and compete in Wizard Olympics, play outdoor quidditch, make mythical creatures, play Harry Potter Jeopardy and bingo, make clay hor cruxes (magical charm items), write owl messages, go on a potions scavenger hunt and much more. Special highlights are a visit from a reptile expert who displays odd creatures for the students to examine as he ties them in to the books and then a real magician who not only performs but also teaches students how to do their own magic tricks. On the last day, there is a graduation ceremony where the muggles (campers) move up to become first class “wizards”.
