Going (Coco)nuts for Guys and Dolls

Maura McFadden, a senior at Glen Ridge High School, walked into an auditorium yesterday holding a grocery bag. She looked up at her classmate Rene Francolini, also a senior.

“Rene, I need you to eat some sorbet.”

“Huh?”

“Your choices are pineapple, strawberry, or coconut.”

It wasn’t a request.

Rene picked a flavor. Maura continued to find other classmates to eat more sorbet. It was urgent. She needed the coconut cups that came with it. She couldn’t find empty coconut cups anywhere—and forget about a real coconut. She’d have to find somebody to drink the milk. Then there would be the issue of flies. That simply wouldn’t do. You might guess that this high school student is, at the very least, slightly unhinged. You’d be close. She’s a member of the Glen Ridge High School Drama Club.

The coconut cups were needed for the Havana scene from Frank Loesser’s Guys and Dolls, which the Drama Club will be performing this weekend (Friday and Saturday at 8, Sunday at 2) at the Ridgewood Avenue School Auditorium (235 Ridgewood Avenue, Glen Ridge.)

“It’s going to be a great show. It’s been amazing working with everybody here,” says freshman Stephanie Mayer. “But if you’re not going to eat any of this sorbet, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

Here’s a little bit of yesterday’s rehearsal.
