What Coffee Does Baristaville Brew?

I love coffee almost as much as I love wine. In fact, I’m not much of a likable person before I’ve had my double shot in the morning.

I grind and brew Kirkland Guatemalan whole beans – yes, Kirkland!  So I wonder, what brand of coffee does Baristaville brew?

  1. My first choice is Starbuck’s Breakfast Blend. My second choice is good old Dunkin Donuts and my 3rd choice is Eight O’ Clock.

  2. You better be careful the statement “yes, Kirkland” it might be compared with “the catch is” on the If You Always wanted a Big Victorian posting. It can come across as divisive amongst the Baristaville towns.

    I’ve always been partial to Eight O’clock coffee since I was a little lad and recall the grinding machines at the end of the check out counters.

  3. Well, herb we finally found common ground. That’s good coffee.
    My mom always bought Eight O’clock coffee in a bag, in bean form, when I was a little kid. She’d let me work those big red metal grinding machines at the end of the A&P checkout line.

  4. Choc Full O’ Nuts. It’s a good reliable coffee and a great metaphor.
    Eight O’clock is a 2nd choice.

  5. Wawa is my current favorite coffee. Needing a coffee fix one day I stopped in a Wawa store and to my surprise I found the coffee to be quite good. So good in fact I bought a bag. Now whenever I spot a Wawa in my travels I stock up on their coffee and drip it at home. I’m in need of a new coffee maker and I’ve been eyeing the new one cup gadgets that are now available. I haven’t quite made up my mind but I’m leaning toward a Keurig with it’s wide selection of gourmet coffee, teas and hot cocoa. I just can’t decide if I want the larger one with the bells and whistles or the smaller version.

  6. We’re a Keurig family. Love those K-cups (though I HATE the amount of garbage they produce, I’ve written the company and they’ve announced “we’re working on it,” good enough for me!!).

    Of the k-kups I’ll go with Green Mountain Sumatra Reserve, but mrs. prof LOVES her Dounut shop.

    Outside the estate, we love Dunkin’ ’cause they use LIGHT CREAM!!! But my hatred of Starbucks has subsided recently.

  7. Wawa, yes!

    Sadly for us, there is not a Wawa to be found north of the Raritan River. Gladly for me, however, Pork Roll has family down the shore, from where he migrated north, whom he visits regularly, providing ample opportunities to fill up with Wawa coffee and some of the cheapest gas around.

    Otherwise, it’s Dunkin Donuts for me.

  8. I’m a fan of DD’s whole bean from Stop & Shop, or Stop & Shop’s own ground variety.

    Recently I got a bag of Gorilla Blendimitosis from Whole Foods which was tasty. Plus it’s super expensive so you know it’s good.

  9. commonsense, I agree, Peet’s is my favorite too. My mom discovered it in the grocery store in Delaware. She always picks up a few bags for me when I come for a visit. Where do you buy it around here?

  10. Prof , I switched to the Keurig pods recently. I agree the used pods are a waste. My kids break my chops because I banned water bottles and those ridiculous plastic bags stores give you in the house but have these used pods to deal with now. Like every good parent I just cover up my hypocrisy by telling my kids “be quiet and worry about yourself”, haha

    I remember heading out to the Fla. Keys a few years back and stopping in a shop for a Cuban coffee. I still believe this to be the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had.

  11. Okay, okay, I lied. I’m a coffee snob. I confess. Starbucks isn’t good enough for me (the drip is bitter and the cappuccino froth is way too stiff), Cafe Electic is a nice place but the coffee is redolent of NJ diners circa 1974. D&D isn’t a bad backup (much preferable to SB) but only if I can’t get my hands on Intelligentsia or Thanksgiving. I haven’t tasted 8 o’clock since my mother used to spike my baby’s bottle.

  12. Funny how people of a certain age remember the A&P coffee grinders. My wife buys Starbuck’s and I buy Dunkin Donuts for home, but Starbucks on the go. Their regular is somewhat bitter and over-roasted, I agree. I remember seeing my first Keurig machine at a car dealer years ago and thinking it was the height of customer service. Their deal with Green Mountain certainly catapaulted that small VT company into the stratosphere. The pods are recyclable, and I’m sure that GMCR would be very amenable to exploring biodegradable pods. There are cellulose cups in use now that are biodegradable and indistinguishable from plastic. Really surprising.

  13. I was the kid at the end of the check out counter at the Belleville A&P back in the day. As a bagger I got to grind the customer’s coffee. Loved the smell it generated. Sadly,that old A&P was leveled and I think it’s now a Wendy’s. Bought my first car with that money….a ’59 bug eyed Austin Healey Sprite…..zoomzoom

When I was working a contract for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Pearl River, NY, a few years ago, their Sodexo-run cafeteria had the best coffee I have ever tasted — Douwe Egberts from the Netherlands. I have not been able to find it in whole bean around here. Also, for several years whilst working west of the Mississippi (before DD expanded), I had Dunkin’ Donuts’ whole bean shipped to me in five-pound bags from The People’s Republic of Massachusetts. Good stuff, and even with shipping costs, it was still pretty reasonable.

    These days, though, Eight O’Clock whole bean is my choice. And it is cheaper at Stop and Shop than it is at A&P — go figure.

    I was down at Mario LoMedico’s Exotic car dealership in Shrewsbury Saturday, and there was a semi-restored 1961 AH Bug-Eye Sprite in one of the service bays. I walked over and looked at the cramped two-seat cockpit and I had to laugh. I raced one of those little egg-beaters in SCCA back in the 60’s and now it would take two shoehorns and a lot of lithium grease to even get into the damn thing (let alone back out, again)! I talked with the owner a bit but the car wasn’t for sale so I have no idea what they go for these days.

  16. Conan, They serve Douwe Egberts all over upstate NY. I just had it for the first time and noticed the name. Quite good. The Dutch are downright maniacal about their coffee.

  17. I’m a coffee snob, too, and a total Peetnik. Their beans just glisten with that beautiful, deep dark brown color that only a bean from Peet’s can. And incidentally, Alfred Peet hailed from the Netherlands. And I like the word Peetnik.

  18. OLnly I picked Yuban. I just cannot believe that. Ther regular, NOT the Organic. The problem is thatYuban does NOT advertise ! If you try it, you will stay with it, ‘ya, it’s THATS good. The Organic is to be avoided. Stop & Sjop & Livingston Shop Rite havbe it.

  19. deadeye & Conan….Fully restored about $20,000. But still way cheaper than a 3000. My Sprite cost me $400. and I pushed it more than I drove it due to the faulty Lucas electronics.

  20. My husband had an AH 3000 Mark II which he restored down to every nut & bolt. It had a revolving malfuction which would relocate after being fixed. I had to hold a jar between my feet in the passenger compartment to catch the flying drops of oil. He had to sell it when we opened our business, but I’m sure that if I were to climb in one again, it would smell like I had to push it.

    My coffee is Starbuck Italian Roast, grinder set on 12 for 4 cups. Or Peets.

  21. No, it’s not dangerous at all. Kings Montclair is much more dangerous: the aisles are way too narrow, and you could get sideswiped a spacial-challenged senior.

  22. PAZ, You had to love Lucas electronics, and British engineering in general. I had a Triumph TR6 in college, that was perpetually in need of repair. One of my funniest memories, in hindsight, was the light switch breaking off in my hand when I was late for a date. Another time I lost the entire exhaust system when I went over a railroad crossing. I think I caught some air on that one. Also, having my girlfriend steer while I pushed the car out of her driveway at night, so as not to wake her parents with the noise from starting the engine.

  23. The reason that Brits drink warm beer is because they have Lucas refrigerators.

    I also owned a series of MGs during the 60’s and 70’s — a Flying Shingle (the MG TD), an early MGA (1955), which must have been a prototype model because (as I later found out to much dismay) all of the wires in the harness were the same color, and an MGB. The batteries (two six-volt, negative earth, wired in series to produce 12 volts) were under a panel behind the seats, and every MG owner I knew carried a good size rock in the boot to bang on the electric fuel pump when it crapped out. Which was often. I had the MGA in college, commuting back and forth from New York to Boston U. Not once in four years did that MG make the trip without incident. No wonder I have no patience anymore…
