I have spent the last two years researching child sexual abuse for a book called Redemption. I co-wrote this memoir about Stacey Lannert, a woman who was sexually abused by her father from the ages of 8 to 18. Feeling fed up and out of options, she shot and killed her dad after he raped her little sister for the first time. Stacey was charged with murder in the first degree and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Through an act of clemency by the governor of Missouri, Stacey was released in 2009. She spent 20 years behind bars.
I’ll read from our book this Thursday and lead a short discussion afterward. In the meantime, Stacey and I are working to help victims through our non-profit organization called Healing Sisters. Check it out for real-life stories and resources. One in four girls are sexually abused, one in six boys. Stacey and I hope these statistics change for the better sometime soon.
