It’s finally time to put the winter clothing away and clean out your closets for spring. If you’re a parent with young children, it might be time to get rid of those great clothes your kids grew out of or maybe never even wore.  You can join Montclair moms, Jane Berra, Jane Day and Katie Severance by donating those clothes to local families who really need them.

For the second year, United Way has joined forces with these amazing local moms to run the Baby Steps Clothing Drive.

In spring 2010, Jane, Katie and Jane began the Baby Steps drive and it was a huge success. Hundreds of pounds of new and like new clothing for children 5 and under was donated and over 100 needy families from the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program received 2 or more bags of clothing for their children.

The organizers found that the families also needed help with diapers and wipes. “The recipients last year were so thrilled with the clothing,” said Katie Severance, “but we also learned that one of their greatest challenges was affording diapers and wipes which have become so expensive.”  So now, even if you don’t have children’s clothing to donate, you can help out by donating diapering supplies.

A new partner, Baby’s Perfect Gift in Montclair, has joined the Baby Steps team. Baby’s Perfect Gift is not only providing an alternate, potentially more convenient drop off location, but is also giving 10% of their proceeds from May 16 – May 20 to the purchase of diapers and wipes for the drive.  “Montclair is such a great community to live in and to own a business that we are thrilled to be able to support such a wonderful cause” say owners Marcia DeOteris and Ilene Goldmeier.

This year, the drive is being opened up to families recommended by more agencies in Montclair. In addition to WIC, families will be invited from United Way Family Success Center, Salvation Army, Interfaith Hospitality Network, Neighborhood Childcare Center, Bethel Rehobeth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry and Human Needs Food Pantry.

People are welcome to drop off new or like new clothing for newborn to 5-year-old children and diapers and wipes from 9 am to 2 pm on Tuesday, May 17, Wednesday, May 18 or Thursday, May 19 in the auditorium at the United Way Building, 60 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair.

Items can also be dropped off at Baby’s Perfect Gift located at 195 Bellevue Avenue, Montclair, 07043 on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday May 15 from 12 pm to 4 pm or Monday May 16 through Thursday May 19 from 10 am to 5 pm. Jane Berra will be collecting clothing on the morning of Tuesday, May 10 at Union Congregational Weekday Nursery School located at 176 Cooper Avenue, Montclair, 07043.

  1. Thanks for the above definite act of the three members. It is surely a good and courageous act for the local members by donating the diaper cakes for those family which actually need in the locality. The five years and more aged children family would donate it and it would be supplied to the other members having 5 or less aged children. So it is a very good deed and also a necessary step for having national brotherhood.
