TIME magazine named Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker to the 2011 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The full list and related tributes will appear in the May 2 issue, available on newsstands tomorrow, Friday, April 22, and now at time.com.

“I feel incredibly humbled and honored,” Mayor Booker said in a press release about the announcement. “In reality this award is truly a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and leadership of the people of Newark. Together we are writing one of the greatest urban stories in our nation right now and I’m grateful to have such a dedicated community getting it done every day in our city.”

The list, now in its eighth year, recognizes the “activism, innovation and achievement of the world’s most influential individuals.” As TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel has said of the list in the past, “The TIME 100 is not a list of the most powerful people in the world, it’s not a list of the smartest people in the world, it’s a list of the most influential people in the world. They’re scientists, they’re thinkers, they’re philosophers, they’re leaders, they’re icons, they’re artists, they’re visionaries. People who are using their ideas, their visions, their actions to transform the world and have an effect on a multitude of people.”

Mayor Booker shares the list with his public school education partners, Mark Zuckerberg and Governor Chris Christie, WikiLeaks leader Julian Assange, both Barak and Michelle Obama, and Jersey rocker Patti Smith. You can see the full list here.

Way to go, Mayor Booker and Newark! Congratulations from your Baristaville neighbors and a big shout out to the Newark Boys Chorus School for providing the city with a great sound track.

  1. I lost all respect for this list when I saw Blake Lively, Jusin Beiber, and Bruno Mars on it.
