Boy Scout Troop 17 Travel To Gettysburg

Boy Scout Troop 17, of Saint Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills, traveled to Gettysburg Pennsylvania last weekend for the 150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War. Over 40-Scouts and adult leaders made the trek to learn more about the conflict that almost destroyed our country.
The Scouts led by Senior Patrol Leader Sean Judge, Patrol Leaders Bobby Dries, Nick Magnotti, Peter Sana, and acting Patrol Leader and former Senior Patrol Leader Andrew Vollavanh organized a 9- mile hike across the battlefield seeing such famous locations as Little Round Top, the Devils Den, the Wheat Field, and Picket’s Charge.
The Scouts learned of the battle where over 160,000 men of the Union and the Confederate forces fought and almost 50,000 men were injured or killed in this three day epic struggle for freedom.
The Scouts visited the site of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and the new Gettysburg Visitor’s Center and Museum. Members camped the weekend at a site adjacent to the famous battlefield.
Troop 17 meets every Thursday night, September through early June at Saint Rose of Lima Church’s Ryan Hall – 50 Short Hills Avenue, Short Hills, New Jersey at 7:30 pm.  Young men between the ages of 10 1/2 and 17 are always welcome to join the Troop.
