The Gardens Were Alive With The Sound of Music

Last night’s outdoor sing-a-long screening of The Sound of Music made me love living in Baristaville. People, old and young, filled the gardens and came together to sing along with Maria, Captain von Trapp and the von Trapp children.

Organizers from Montclair International Film Festival even walked around the many picnic blankets and lawn chairs to pass around a microphone to brave singers. But there was no need to feel shy, because every one sang. The gardens were filled with singing, laughing and clapping.

MIFF will offer more outdoor movies as part of its Cinema Montclairismo to be screened on Church Street. Up next, on June 30 is Apollo 13 and then Back to The Future on July 29.

The plan was to go see the Jackals and then head over to the Iris Gardens. When we got to the stadium, the Jackals were losing by 10 runs, and we figured we’d make a quick exit. But by some miracle, they started hitting, driving home runs. In the seventh inning a Jack batter ripped one down the first-base line to the fence for a triple, bringing them within one run of tying the score. They ultimately lost 11 to 10, but by then the Gestapo had been outsmarted and the Von Trapps were safely in America, shopping at the Short Hills mall.

So sad to have missed this. I watched it every year, on a Sunday night in the winter, with my family.

I'm struck by how much attention is being paid to the details of a parking lot, as opposed to the attention paid to the future impact of the monstrous projects being planned.
