I love books.  Even more, I love today’s children’s books.  One of my favorites is the American Girl series.

After reading the article Meet Cécile and the Montclair Author Who Writes About Her here on Barista Kids, my 7-year-old and I ventured out to St. Paul Baptist Church in Montclair. Authors Denise Lewis Patrick and Sarah Master Buckly appeared at the reading and book signing for the book series corresponding to the new American Girl dolls, Cécile and Marie-Grace.

Traditionally, there is a six-book series highlighting the history, life, struggles and celebrations of each American Girl doll.  For these two new dolls, there is a celebration of friendship with three books for each doll highlighting their adventures in New Orleans in 1853.

American Girl dolls and books are a big hit in my house.  This was a splendid event honoring friendships of young girls, history of a great American city and the love of reading.  Both Ms Patrick and Ms. Buckly read passages from the books they wrote, answered questions from the audience and signed books for the children.

During the Q & A, both authors emphasized reading, reading, reading and the necessity for re-writes in their work. This mom almost stood up and cheered!

There were lots of books for purchase and an auction for dolls too.  St. Paul Baptist Church hosted a lovely event. Both Ms Patrick and Ms. Buckly were kind, patient and very approachable.  As a parent, it was delightful to see such positive role models.

If you missed this event and cannot make it into New York City to visit the American Girl store, visit Watchung Booksellers or your local library for Meet Cécile and Meet Marie-Grace.

Happy reading!
