Ask Holly: Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles for the New Year

When I asked my eight-year-old what New Years Eve makes her think of, she simply said, “Bubbles.” Most likely because we love going to First Night Montclair and watching BubbleMania and because I always make my kids fancy bubbly drinks on New Years Eve. Mommy stays far away from adult bubbly drinks, as she and Mr. Champagne had a nasty break-up.

Here are few bubbly things to do with the kids for New Year’s, from blowing frozen bubbles to making “Fancy Drinks” as my four-year-old calls them.

Make a “Bubble” Display:

  • A large clear vase, apothecary jar or large clear bowl
  • Christmas ornaments in clear, opaque, silver or gold in a variety of sizes
  • Scraps of glitter, ribbon, fabric or anything that is gold or silver to fit inside of the ornaments

Step One: My kids and I searched the house and under the tree for bits and pieces of any thing gold or silver. Then we took the tops off of the clear ornaments and put different things in them. It was fun to see what worked and what didn’t.

Step Two: Put the ornaments in a big vase, alternating colors and shape. TIP: When you put the ornaments into the vase make sure the tops are facing inward so they look more like bubbles. Silver and gold curling ribbon looked rather festive as well.

Make Bubbly Drinks:
This is simple. You can either go the route of soda and fruit juice or make a healthier version with fruit juice and seltzer. For fun I just added some grapes on a wooden skewer. We liked  Pineapple juice and seltzer and Natural Green Apple Soda

Make Frozen Bubbles:
When the temperature is below 32° bubbles will freeze. Try putting the bubble solution in the refrigerator beforehand so the bubbles will freeze more quickly. Give your kids a magnifying glass to get a closer look at the frozen bubbles. Some times the bubble will actually shatter when broken!
