The teens in Montclair High School Save Darfur Club holds various fundraisers to raise money for refugees of the genocide in Darfur. One specific project is the Solar Cooker Project, which gives solar-powered stoves to refugees. Without these, refugees are forced to venture out of the shelter of their camps and risk their lives looking for firewood. Acording to Jewish World Watch’s Solar Cooker Project, just a $40 donation can provide a family with two solar cookers and training.
A great way to raise money for this worthy project is by hosting a dinner and silent auction. Last year, the MHS Save Darfur Club did just. Allison Aaronson, the co-president of the Montclair Save Dafur Club, told us the club raised nearly $3,000 at last year’s dinner and has hopes for more at this year’sevent. The community is invited to this year’s dinner and silent auction on January 7 at St. James Church in Montclair.
You’ll enjoy great food, cooked by the students themselves, and live music from The Passing Notes, MHS’s acapella group, and Jami Price playing the viola. Items to be auctioned off span a wide range of interests, including dinner for four at Greek Delights Restaurant, a free hair cut from Parlor Hair Salon, Clearview Cinemas movie tickets, Montclair Beadworks merchandise, and a Fragrance collection. All proceeds will benefit the Solar Cooker Project.
