Montclair Police Blotter: Drug Arrests, Thefts from Cars

Here is the latest police blotter from Montclair.

Shoplifting

On 2/1/12 at approximately 9:55 PM, police responded to the Exxon Gas Station. Upon arrival, police spoke to an employee who stated that a shoplifting had just occurred. The employee told police that a black male, last seen wearing a black jacket and possibly a hat, had grabbed approximately five Bic lighters and exited the store without paying.
The employee followed the suspect southbound on Elm Street, but lost sight of the suspect in the area of Union Street. Anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Joseph Anderson at 973-509-4706.

Burglary Attempt

On 2/1/12 at approximately 7:20 AM, police responded to a single-family residence on Heller Way in Upper Montclair on a report of an attempted burglary. The victim reported that sometime between the 27th of January and 2/1/12, someone had damaged the rear door and window to the residence. Nothing was reported as missing from the residence. There are no suspects at this time.

Vandalism

On 2/1/12 at approximately 12:45 PM, police responded to the Siena Building on South Park Street on a report of vandalism. Upon arrival, police spoke to an employee, who stated that sometime between 11:00 PM on the 27th and 8:30 AM on the 28th, a stop gate arm located on the Trinity Place side of the building had been damaged. There are no suspects at this time.

Drug Arrests

On 2/1/12 at approximately 3:45 Pm, police responded to Mountainside Park in Upper Montclair on a report of three individuals engaged in possible drug use. Upon arrival, police located three individuals sitting on a bench in the area provided by the caller. Upon seeing the officer, the three began to walk out of the park, but were ordered to stop by the officer. Upon approaching the three individuals, police noticed the smell of burnt marijuana.

Further investigation revealed that one of the individuals, later identified as Jelani Foster, was in possession of a zip-lock bag of marijuana. A sixteen year old Montclair male was found to be in possession of a bowl used for smoking marijuana, while a seventeen year old Montclair male was found to be in possession of rolling papers.
All three males were placed under arrest. Foster, 18, of Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was later released. The two juveniles were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and turned over to their guardians.

Motor Vehicle Theft

On 2/2/12 at approximately 5:35 AM, police responded to a single-family residence on Lloyd Road on a report of a stolen vehicle. Police spoke to the victim, who stated that sometime between 8:30 PM on the 1st and 5:20 AM on the 2nd, someone had stolen his light-blue Land Rover from the driveway. The victim believed that the vehicle had been left locked prior to the theft. There are no suspects at this time.

Theft from a Motor Vehicle

On 2/2/12 at approximately 9:15 AM, police responded to Montclair Avenue on a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. The victim told police that she parked her Acura MDX in the driveway on the 1st at approximately 6:00 PM. When she returned to the vehicle on the 2nd at approximately 8:40 AM, she discovered that the driver’s side front door was ajar and that the glove compartment had been rummaged through. The victim later discovered that the vehicle’s owner’s manual, registration and insurance cards had been stolen. There are no suspects at this time.

Theft from a Motor Vehicle

On 2/2/12 at approximately 11:15 AM, police responded to Beverly Road in Upper Montclair on a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. The complainant stated that he parked a family member’s vehicle in the driveway on the 1st at approximately 6:00 PM. When he returned to the vehicle, a Cadillac Escalade, on the 2nd at approximately 9:00 AM, he discovered that the contents of the glove compartment had been removed. There are no suspects at this time.

Burglary

On 2/2/12 at approximately 3:15 PM, police responded to an apartment on Glenridge Avenue on a report of a burglary. The complainant stated that someone had entered the apartment on that date between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM and stolen $10 cash, a Microsoft XBOX 360 console, valued at $300, two XBOX games, and a Sony Playstation 3 console, valued at $300. It is believed that the apartment had been left unlocked prior to the theft.

Burglary

On 2/2/12 at approximately 7:40 PM, police responded to a single-family residence on Union Street on a report of a burglary that had just occurred. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant, who had been working in the basement. At approximately 7:00 PM, she heard a security alarm chime, indicating that one of the doors inside the residence had been opened. The complainant believed that it may have been another family member arriving home and did not investigate further.
Approximately twenty-five minutes later, the victim heard the alarm chimes activate again and went upstairs to investigate. She then noticed that her dog was growling towards the backyard area. The victim then saw that her Silver HP Pavilion laptop Model G6, valued at $400, was missing from her kitchen table. It is believed that the suspect gained entry to the residence through an unlocked door. There are no suspects at this time.

Suspicious Vehicle

On 2/3/12 at approximately 3:55 PM, police responded to Yantacaw Brook Road in Upper Montclair on a report of a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant, who stated that she observed a white Chrysler Pacifica with New Jersey license plates parked and idling in front of her driveway. The vehicle was occupied by two black males. The passenger was described as being twenty to twenty-four years old and wearing a black-colored du-rag. The complainant stated that the passenger was looking down her driveway in the area of her Mercedes. The passenger then noticed that the complainant had been watching him and the driver reportedly quickly reversed the vehicle and fled east on Heller Way.

Drug Arrests

On 2/3/12 at approximately 4:35 PM, detectives were in the area of Pine Street when they observed a van fail to stop at a stop sign at Sherman Street. Detectives stopped the van and observed a box cutter and two open containers of alcoholic beverages in plain view within the vehicle. Detectives then spoke to the occupants of the vehicle, identified as Tawanda Moses, Johnnie Howell, and Carol Silvera. Further investigation revealed that Howell was in possession of eleven glassine envelopes containing heroin, while Moses was found to be in possession of ten glassine envelopes containing heroin. Silvera was found to have warrants for her arrest. All three individuals were taken into custody.
Howell, 79, of Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within a public property zone located at 11 Pine Street. Bail was set at $35,000.
Moses, 41, of Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute within a public property zone located at 11 Pine Street. Bail was set at $35,000.
Silvera, 53, of Montclair, was held on warrants issued by Montclair, with bail totaling $1,608. Anyone wishing to report drug activity is asked to call 973-509-4720.

Drug Arrests

On 2/4/12 at approximately 8:20 PM, detectives were in the area of Pine Street when they observed a taxi stop on Pine Street. The taxi was occupied by a female passenger, later identified as Neta Pringley, and a male passenger, later identified as Dallie Shell. Pringley exited the taxi, but upon seeing the detectives, she handed a small object to Shell. Shell was then seen placing the item on the seat and sitting on top of it.
Shell was removed from the vehicle and the items that he was sitting on were found to be thirty glassine envelopes containing heroin. Shell and Pringley were both placed under arrest.
Shell, 46, of Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute. Bail was set at $35,000. Shell was also found to have a warrant issued by Montclair, with bail set at $348.
Pringley, 44, of Montclair, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute. Bail was set at $35,000. She was also found to have warrants issued by Newark, with bail set at $158, Irvington, with bail totaling $891, Maplewood, with bail set at $250, and South Plainfield, with bail set at $290.
