Read Across America Goes Green With The Lorax

Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, would have been 108-years-old on March 2. In honor of the man who gave us The Cat in the Hat and many other childhood favorites, March 2 is also Read Across America Day, an annual reading motivation and awareness program from the National Education Association (NEA) that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading.

This year, Read Across America is going green with The Lorax. The book with the environmental message of sustainability was first published in 1971 and has been made into a new film to be released on March 2.

You can join in Read Across America and the celebration of Dr. Seuss in the following ways:

1) Target’s “Let’s Read Together” Dr. Seuss Storytime: The Lorax
Seuss fans of all ages.
What: Bring the kids to your local Target for Dr. Seuss Storytime to hear a live reading of The Lorax, receive free goody bags, take part in fun activities, and more.
Where: Your local Target:

When: Saturday, February 25 between 9 am and 11 am.

3) Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss
Kids ages 4 – 6.
What: Hip, hip, hooray for Dr. Seuss! Bring your blankets and your imaginations as we prepare to enter a world of mixed-up and silly creatures, where the weird and wacky are normal. We will read Seuss stories and celebrate with birthday cake!
Where: Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge, NJ.
When: Saturday, March 1 from 4 pm – 5:15 pm

5) Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss
Toddlers and little kids.
Join an all-weekend celebration of Dr. Seuss
New Jersey Children’s Museum, 599 Valley Health Plaza, Paramus, NJ
Saturday, March 3 and Sunday, March 4 from 11:45 am – 3:45 pm
Admission to museum is $10 per person.

6) Make a Lorax craft. We love this idea for a planter or a crown on Little Birdie Secrets.

7) Seussical
Fans of Dr. Seuss ages 4 – 10.
What: “Oh, the thinks you can think,” when Dr. Seuss’s best-loved characters such as the Cat in the Hat and Horton the Elephant take the stage in this fun-filled Theatreworks USA musical adventure.
Where:  Mayo Center for the Performing Arts, 100 South Street, Morristown, NJ.
When: Monday, March 26 at 4 pm

8 ) Make The Lorax cakepops! Bakerella shows how here. Yours may not look as good, but who cares?!

9) Watch PBS Kids on Friday, March 1. They will be running the 1st ever Cat in The Hat-A-Thon!

10) Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
Ages 5 – 7
What: Join us for this very special “Read Across America” event as we celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday by going green! We will read “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss and play Truffula Trees Dominos, followed by a “speed-reading” of the tongue-twisting “Green Eggs and Ham!”

11) Saturday Storytime: Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Celebration!
