Do you have a Tween or Teen? If you’re not shipping them off to sleepaway camp this summer, this list of local day camp options will help. If you are looking for a sleepaway camp, we have some great options for you in our list coming this week.

We gave you a list of camps for younger yesterday. Check it out here if you have a “big kid” and a “little kid.”

There is a camp for all types of kids: the artist, the athlete or the kid who likes to travel. Not every camp is listed, but we are constantly searching for more options. We will continue to update throughout the summer. If you know of a great camp that’s not on our list, please send us an email.

YMCA Camps

South Mountain YMCA Pre-Teen Adventure Camp
Maplecrest Park, Maplewood & South Orange Community Pool, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Grades 5 – 6.
What: These camps follow an extensive travel schedule with trips each week to places such as: Dorney Park, Mountain Creek, Laser Tag, Dave and Busters, NY City, Great Adventure, bowling, ice skating, fishing and local beaches.
When: June 25 – August 24 from 9 am – 3:30 pm. Occasionally extended as late as 6:00pm due to travel schedules. Before and aftercare available for an additional fee.
Cost: $975 each 3-week session

South Mountain YMCA Teen Adventure Camp
Maplecrest Park, Maplewood & South Orange Community Pool, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Grades 7 – 8.
What: Teen Campers (7th-8th graders) can attend one overnight trip per session, including a camp-out at the beautiful Fairview Lake YMCA camp grounds. These camps will be divided by grades for groups, but may interact for activities such as team-building
exercises, games, sports, crafts, community service projects and swimming twice a week when not on trips. Staff are college-educated, fully trained and demonstrate a desire to develop positive values in youth.
When: June 25 – August 24 from 9 am – 3:30 pm. Occasionally extended as late as 6:00pm due to travel schedules.Before and aftercare available for an additional fee.
Cost: $975 each three week camp.

South Mountain YMCA Sports Galore Camp
Jefferson Elementary School, 518 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Kids entering grades k – 6.
What: This camp gives campers the opportunity to experience over 15 different sports from around the world
in a week, plus group team building games and other fun activities. Campers will receive technical instruction in each
sport and will then experience the sport in a realistic game situation.
When: 3 mini one-week sessions during the weeks of: July 18th, July 25th and August 1st
Cost: $285 per week.

South Mountain YMCA Golf  Camp
Depending on weather, the camp will play at various local driving ranges and golf courses. The camp day starts and ends at the Y.
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 8
What: Golf Camp is tailored for ALL SKILL LEVELS; from those who have never played before to the more experienced player
looking to advance their game.
When: Three 1-week sessions; weeks of: July 18, July 25 and August 1 from 9 am – 3 pm.
Cost: $665 per week.

Montclair YMCA Teen Travel Camp
Where: Montclair YMCA, 25 Park Street, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Teens ages 13 -15.
What: Teens will take field trips to places that will teach the group leadership skills, social & cultural awareness, and community service. Day trips may include some of the following destinations: Liberty State Park, Hurricane Harbor, Bronx Zoo, College Tours, Circle Line Tour, Bowling, Movies, Six Flags Amusement Park and much more! Registration begins on March 1.

Explorers Camp at the Geyer Family Y
Where: Geyer Family YMCA, 159 Glenridge Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Children ages 9 – 12.
What: A fun-filled summer program with activities such as swim, games, trips to local attractions and more!
When: June – September (10 one-week sessions) from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.  Before Camp hours offered from 7:30 am – 8:30 am. After Camp hours offered from 3:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Registration Saturday, March 24 from 8 am – 12 pm

Montclair YMCA Camp at the Lake
Where: Montclair YMCA facility in West Milford.
Who: Children ages 6-12.
What: The Camp at the Lake offers swim lessons, sports, crafts, nature, outdoor survival skills, hiking, archery, recreational swimming, low ropes challenge, drama, boating, and fishing. This camp provides children with exciting adventures, cooperative learning and tons of FUN! The campers will express their creativity, unleash their boundless energy, learn new skills and develop meaningful relationships. Transportation is provided from 8 convenient locations.

Camp Rocks at The Gravity Vault Indoor Rock Gym
Where: 40 Watchung Avenue, Chatham, NJ.
Who: Kids ages 7 – 14.
What: Offers Camp Rocks which is a full week of fun and climbing and is open to both beginners and advanced climbers.  They also offer a  summer break camp which is a great blend of climbing, bouldering and games for two hours a day, and you have the option of climbing with us for just 1, 2 or all 3 days.

Big 5 Montclair High School Team Camp

Prime Time Summer Arts – Sharron Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts
Where: 87 Mount Hebron Road, Montclair, NJ, 07043.
Who: Children ages 6 – 14.
What: Full-day program offering daily classes in art, music, dance and drama. Each session ends in a free public performance.
When: June 25 – August 3 divided into two 3-week sessions. Public performances on July 13 and August 3.

Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center Softball Camp
Where: 8 Yogi Berra Drive, Little Falls, NJ
Who: Girls ages 8 – 12.
What: Softball camp is designed for girls to learn, have fun and enhance their skills in all phases of softball.
Under the direction of Leslie Korkgy-Valenti and her staff, we provide the opportunity for young players to improve their ability level and develop into the best player possible with all out-door activities taking place at the beautiful Montclair State softball park. Refreshments, lunch and a camp T-shirt will be provided and there will also be some sports education activities inside the Museum, where the players will report each morning and be picked up after camp.

MVP Sports Camp

What: All sports camp with a variety of games designed to improve athleticism, sportsmanship and putting the fun back into sports.

Dave Masur’s St. John’s Montclair Soccer Camps at MSU
Where: Montclair State University, 1 Normal Avenue, Montclair, NJ, 07043.
Who: Kids ages 5-14.
What: All day soccer camp held both on two outdoor facilities and an indoor facility for lunch, movies and more. The camp will be run by top level youth, high school coaches from Montclair high , and college coaches from the Montclair state  and Metropolitan area. Maplewood Karate and Kickboxing Camp

R.I.S.E Girls Basketball Camp

Who: Girls in grades 4 – 12.
What: This is a fundamentals-based camp. Emphasis will be on basic offensive and defensive basketball skills, speed and agility, and also on enhancing confidence, leadership, and knowledge of the game. The morning session will consist of speed/agility training, skill stations and confidence/team building exercises. During the afternoon sessions the campers will compete in skills competitions and play 1-on-1, 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games.  Each player will receive a camp T-shirt and a chance to win prizes.

Evolution Lacrosse Academy
Where: Anderson Park in Montclair, NJ, 07043
Who: Two camps: Mini-Laxers ages 5 -6 and Co-Ed ages 7 – 14.
What: Children will benefit from an age and skill appropriate curriculum and an excellent coach-to-player ratio of 1:5. The camps will be led by Matt Podwoski, an experienced educator and coach with more than 20 years of experience, and his trained staff of lacrosse player/coaches. The Co-Ed camp provides safe, fun, competitive and age-appropriate instruction for boys and girls ages 7-14. Instruction will focus on basic to advanced lacrosse skills through individual, group and positional work. Who: Kids ages 7-14 years
What: Rock Climbing and Sports Camp. The climbing program focuses on proper equipment use, climbing techniques and safety while building strength, flexibility, concentration and problem solving. Deerkill Day Camp

Who: Kids ages 3 – 14
What: Deerkill Day Camp, celebrating its 54th season under the Rhodes family, is a smaller ACA-accredited day camp that offers a warm and supportive environment on a beautiful 15 acre campus.  The Group Leaders, the counselors who are with your children throughout the day, are mature adults.  Deerkill offers a superb swimming program, team sports and a dozen specialty programs in the creative and performing arts.  Campers are ages 3-14 and come to camp for a minimum of 2 weeks. Transportation is by air-conditioned minibus.  Hot lunches, towels, supplies, trips and a weekend pool club are included.  No tipping allowed.

JCC Metrowest Camp Deeny Riback

Spring Lake Day Camp

Who: Kids in Pre-K – 10th grade.

Stonybrook Day Camp

Who: Kids ages 3  – 15.

Who: Kids ages 6-16
What: Camp Ramapo is a traditional summer camp experience for children with social, emotional, or learning challenges, including children affected by autism spectrum disorders. Camp Ramapo’s program is carefully structured to help children with special needs learn to live within a group, form healthy friendships, make good choices, develop self-confidence, and experience success.

Jeff Lake Camp
:  Jeff Lake is located on a beautiful 50 acre lake in Stanhope, New Jersey.
:  Jeff Lake offers a wide variety of age appropriate programs for children in pre- school through 10th grade.

Willow Lake Day Camp
Where: 200 State Route 181, Lake Hopatcong, NJ
Who: Ages 3 – 8th grade, with a CIT program for 9th and 10th graders.
What: Willow Lake has developed age appropriate programs which ensures each child has a healthy, safe and fun experience.  Campers thrive in our dynamic program which continues to grow with them each summer as they get older.  Our activities and equipment are specifically designed to fit the needs of campers of all ages and skill levels. Willow Lake’s modern fleet of air-conditioned 16 and 25 seat school buses (they do not use big buses) is carefully routed to ensure the shortest ride to and from camp each day. What: Campers can enjoy arts & crafts, sports, drama, games, swimming and weekly trips.

The Handywork Studio Camps
Where: Montclair State University, Little Falls / Montclair, NJ.
Who: Kids in kindergarten – 10th grade.
What: The Handwork Studio is a kids’ needle arts and fashion camp. Its purpose is to pass down the tradition of teaching practical arts such as knitting, crocheting, hand and machine sewing, embroidery, quilting, fashion and crafts in a fun and relaxed environment. Several camp options available: half-day, full-day, afternoon program and machine sewing for older kids.

Montclair Art Museum – SummerART
Where: 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042
Who: Kids ages 5 to teens.
What: The theme-based SUMMERART Camp provides four two-week sessions during which children will work in mediums such as drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and printmaking. Visits to the Museum’s galleries are included to enrich the child’s knowledge of fine arts. In addition to making art every day, children are encouraged to interact, talk, and learn about the history of art, its role in society, and how it affects our daily lives. Each session concludes with a student exhibit in MAM’s Leir Hall and the Yard School of Art Arcade. Light refreshments are serves, and family and friends are encouraged to attend. Art projects are taken home at this time.
When: July 2 – August 24. Children are grouped into ages groups: 5-7, 8 and 9, and 10-12. Ages 5-7 can choose either morning session (9:30 am – 1:45 pm) or afternoon session (3 pm – 5 pm). Ages 8-12 can choose any option.

Montclair Art Museum Pottery Camp
Where: 3 South Mountain Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042
Who: Kids ages 6 – 12.
What: The Yard School of Art is excited to offer four two-week sessions of Pottery Camp in our Ceramics Studio. This camp is for children and teenagers who are interested specifically in working with clay to create pottery, sculpture, and more. Campers are grouped in age-specific classes (6 – 8, and 9 – 12) Campers will have the opportunity to use the Museum’s diverse collection of Native American pottery as inspiration. Much of the work created in Pottery Camp will be kiln fired; some will be functional, some will be decorative, and all of it will be treasured for years to come. Much of this artwork will be displayed at the receptions in Leir Hall at the end of each session.

Montclair Art Museum Digital Media Camp

Who: Kids ages 8 – 12.
What: This camp exposes students to working collaboratively while using new technology as a tool for creative expression and communication in our increasingly connected and digital world. Camp is open to all levels and no prior knowledge of software is required; however, basic comfort using a computer is recommended. Students will be provided with a USB drive to take home their projects.

Express Yourself Studios Summer Art Camp
Where: 1877 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, NJ.
Who: Artists ages 5 – 12.
What: Offers children the opportunity to experiment with a variety of media in a fun and supportive environment.  Children will be encouraged to use their imagination freely. Participants will create 10-15 art projects per week.  The projects are inspired by different Master Artists. Children will learn about the Artists through discussions, examples, and art-making. Projects include painting, drawing, mixed media collage, sculpture, printmaking and paper mache (relative to the artists).  An exhibition and reception featuring students’ artwork will be held at the conclusion of each  workshop week.

Summer Camp attendees will build at least two projects, which will be selected based upon the experience of the students. They’ll learn to use  tools and techniques, and will leave with some pieces they’ll be pleased with. Groups are small so student get individual attention. Zoo Camps

Gesher Summer Camp

Who: Kids in Pre-K – 10th grade.
What: The only Jewish ACA-accredited camp in Essex County. Apple Camp
Where: Local Apple stores (Willowbrook Mall, Short Hills Mall and Garden State Mall)
Who: Kids ages 8 -12.
What: Learn the ins and outs of iMovie and how to make a film in about the time it takes to watch one. From storyboarding to shooting footage to editing, kids will create their own film from start to finish. The workshop, held at the Apple Retail Store, spans three days and leads up to an Apple Camp Film Festival where campers debut their masterpieces.

Children’s Summer Program at The Adult School
South Orange Middle School, South Orange, NJ.
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 12.
What: The program offers more than 100 classes in academic enrichment, creative arts and sports. The range of choices includes creative classes, academic enrichment, games, sports, and more. There’s something for every child, including: Acting, Art, Math, Printmaking, Mosaics, Karate, Knitting, Hip Hop, Comics, First Aid, Computers and Science. The sports camps are for children and teens entering grades 1-12. They run in mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, in four one-week sessions and include co-ed baseball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics and track & field; boys lacrosse and basketball; and girls lacrosse.

Montclair Mud Fun Camp
Where: Kaveny Field-behind the fences of the baseball field, enter near the corner of Walnut and Christopher Street, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Kids ages 5 – 14.
What: A youth led festive summer event with live drums, food, barefoot mud stomp dancing and mud building/sculpting activities! The building of Adobe [sun baked mud] shelters is a tradition that stretches back thousands of years in all climates around the world. Campers will help design and make earthen structures that will remain in Kaveny Field for public viewing.
When: August 15 – August 19. Monday through Friday, 9:30 am-12 pm. Each Friday afternoon from 6 pm-8 pm there will be a community celebration and demonstration featuring food, Essex Diversity Youth Theater Group, drumming, and more!

What: This summer, we will be performing the show Just So. Based on the immortal short stories of Rudyard Kipling, Just So takes you on a fantastic journey along the banks of Africa’s great, grey-green, greasy Limpopo River to meet an amazing collection of strange and wonderful creatures.  Set at the beginning of time, the musical introduces the Eldest Magician who has created a world of beasts and birds and fish.  Everything was just so, until Pau Amma the Crab began playing with the ocean, causing a flood that threatened the other animals.

South Orange – Maplewood Adult School Children’s Summer Program
Where: South Orange Middle School, 70 North Ridgewood Road, South Orange, NJ.
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 12.
What: The Children’s Summer Program is a fun and educational camp.  The program offers more than 100 classes in academic enrichment, creative arts and sports. The range of choices includes creative classes, academic enrichment, games, sports, and more. There’s something for every child, including: Acting, Art, Math, Printmaking, Mosaics, Karate, Knitting, Hip Hop, Comics, First Aid, Computers and Science.The sports camps  run in mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, in four one-week sessions and include co-ed baseball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics and track & field; boys lacrosse and basketball; and girls lacrosse.

Newark Academy Summer Session
Where: 91 South Orange Avenue, Livingston, NJ.
Who: Children entering grades 3 – 12.
What: Offers courses for advanced credit, enrichment and skill development, as well as preview courses in core subjects. The classes, taught by a talented faculty, are small, providing an excellent academic experience. All summer session classrooms are air-conditioned.

Montclair State University’s Academically Gifted & Talented Summer Programs

Camp Invention
Where: Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, 9 Manger Road, West Orange, NJ.
Who: Kids in grades 1 – 6.
What: A day at the Camp Invention program is packed with hands-on activities, brainstorming, experimentation, and unbelievable action! Although daily activities are widely diverse and vary based on the program being hosted, as well as the number of participants. Children explore, create, invent and much more.

Who: Academically talented students from post-fourth to post-eleventh grades.
What: The Center for Pre-College Programs offers a series of summer programs for high achieving students from post-fourth to post-eleventh grades. The programs are designed to encourage and prepare students to succeed in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Travel and Adventure Camps


Surf and Turf Camp
Where: Kids travel to various hiking, paintball, tubing, and rock climbing locations.
Who: Children ages 10 – 15.
What: Pick up at Edgemont Park in Montclair. Then they take the adventure on the road to various hiking and swimming spots in the NY/NJ Metropolitan area and beyond. They’ve gone as far as Old Rag Mountain, VA and as close as Mills Reservation in Cedar Grove. Check out the Schedule for this years itinerary.

Music Camps


School of Rock Montclair Rock Boot  Camp
Where: 125 Valley Road, Montclair, NJ, 07042.
Who: Children ages 7-18
What: Themed week sessions. Students participate in group lessons and rehearsals, learn music theory, and take a crash course on how to ROCK on stage, stay in tune, keep a groove, and have FUN doing it! Special concert at the end of the session at a real music venue. Unique Songwriting and Recording Camp this summer! Campers will write and record their own original music using state-of-the-art digital studio equipment in this two week session!

MKA’s Summer Jazz Jam Camp
Where: MKA Middle School Campus, 201 Valley Road, Montclair, 07042.
Who: Young musicians in 5th through 8th grade.
What:Learn the basics of jazz music theory and how to improvise a solo from a professional faculty that includes Matt Patuto, Andy McKee. Bob Henke and Program Director Linda Larkin, Director of MKA’s highly successful Middle School Band and Jazz Bands. Camp is divided into Master Class, Theory and Listening and Ensemble periods.

Jazz House Kids Summer Workshop Camp
Where: 14 South Park Street, Montclair, NJ, 07042
Who: Young musicians ages 8-20
What: The Jazz House Summer Workshop, (JHSW) provides the ingredients for students to become well-rounded musicians and the keys to the art of jazz performance. The Big Bands group spend a day rehearsing and perform in the evening at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola in New York.  Artistic chair Christian McBride hosts. There is also a sleepover at the Salvation Army Citadel to prepare The camp culminates into the Montclair Jazz Festival where every student performs.
When: Two weeks from August 6  – 18.

JCC Metrowest Teen Travel Camp
Where: Cooperman JCC, West Orange, NJ
Who: Ages 13 – 22.
What: Campers take part in weekly activities and day trips. Teen Tracks Travel includes community volunteer services and social & communication skill development activities. * Enrollment is limited. * Interview required.

Harbor Haven Day Camp
Where: 1418 Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, NJ.
Who: Children ages 3 – 15 with mild special needs.
What: 8-acre private school setting provides an opportunity to experience typical summer activities such as sports, swim, nature, outdoor adventure, drama, dance, music, cooking, bikes, photography, computers, art, gymnastics yoga and more in an environment where success and positive self-esteem are fostered. In addition, social skills group, daily academics and speech and occupational therapy groups are provided within the schedule.
When: The day is 9 am – 3:40 pm for children ages 5-15.  Bright Beginnings Children, ages 3 & 4 attend  from 10 am – 2 pm.

Lose the Training Wheels Bike Camp
Who: Children with special needs.
What: A fun camp to teach children with special needs to ride a two-wheel bicycle.

When: 75 minute riding session daily for 5 days from July 9 – July 13
