Baristaville Open Houses: Sunday, Mar. 18

There is a lot to choose from at all price points this weekend in Baristaville, with about 110 properties showing in Montclair, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Maplewood, West Orange, South Orange and Millburn. Properties start at $159,000 (25 Calvin Terr., West Orange, a seven-room Colonial) and approach the $3 million mark (80 Mohawk Rd., Millburn, a 7,700-sq. ft. 15-room Colonial, listed at $2,799,000). This week, many of the new listings are larger houses and properties. Older listings dominate, however, and reductions are less common than in recent weeks.

The master suite takes up the entire third floor and boasts a bathroom with a heated floor and custom shower. The circa 1928 house also has central air and a second fireplace in the living room. Lastly, there is a full, finished, walkout basement and two car attached garage. Open house 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Also a sizable new listing, this nine-room Colonial has a lot of interior flair – check out the seven course crown moldings and checkered flooring in the foyer. Many details original to its 1917 construction remain, including a fireplace in the living room. Upgrades include the kitchen, which has granite countertops, and central air on the second level. Other amenities include a master suite with a walk-in closet and a private back deck. There is a full, unfinished, walkout basement and two car attached garage. Open house 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Just reduced by $10,000, this eight-room Colonial has large rooms, central air and a patio. The kitchen has been updated but it’s on the smaller side. There is a finished, full basement and two car detached garage. The house was constructed in 1929. Open house 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Also showing in town: 42 Osborne St., Bloomfield, a five-bedroom Colonial with 1.2 bathrooms, is open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Improvements abound. Among them: a new driveway;  a conversion to natural gas (including a new boiler, hot water heater, chimney liner and certified removal of oil tank); and new paint. The nine-room circa 1907 house is listed at $399,000.

This four-room corner unit, built in 1924, has a large dining room that leads to a screened porch; formal dining room; high ceilings with moldings; and parquet floors. There is an eat-in kitchen, but it’s dated. The building has an art deco lobby with marble and laundry in the basement. The price was lowered by $10,000 in December. Open house 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

  1. The taxes in this area are becoming absurdly high. Something’s got to give somewhere. We live in a pressure cooker and it’s starting to whistle. Take cover!

  2. Higher property taxes lower wages, more layoffs…..Not a good combo. I thought I could retire here now I’m not sure if we can stay to see our daughter through H.S.

  3. There’s no way I can retire here. 10 years ago, I thought it would be easy. But that was before the economic crisis and the collapse of the housing market. I just hope I can sell my home and walk away with enough cash to be able to live on a beach in a third world country with the proceeds and what’s left of the 401k I had when I had one of those cushy jobs.
