  1. Yes, luckily no one was hurt. But as a car guy, I have to correct the story. A Cobra is not a souped-up Mustang. It may have a Ford motor in it, but the body (which looks like an old-time British roadster) is built by AC Cars in England. These were all built for Ford by Carroll Shelby, who recently passed away.

Most likely, this was a replica. A real Cobra goes for six figures these days.

  2. Cobras, replicas or not, are small cars. It was lucky for Earl Slick that he wasn’t hurt.

Slick has performed with David Bowie and with John Lennon.

  3. I drove by before the fire engines got there; two guys were standing by the car, on phones (so I didn’t call 911 for them). I saw the guy pictured here, with considerably less (and less exciting) hair. I was surprised at how close to the car they were standing, given the flames shooting out from under it. I kept picturing the gas tank exploding–I would have moved a lot farther away!

  4. We saw the guy driving down Church Street right before it happened in his super cool (hot) replica. My neighbor took a close up of the car on fire. It was ugly and scary.

  5. The headline makes it sound as if the world of music thus avoided a great, irreparable loss. I mean, hey, it was “Earl Slick!”

Really, the headline, whatever the actual incident, is laughable.

I thought at first this referred to the guy who used to be married to Grace Slick pre-Jefferson Airplane. Then I recalled his first name was Darby.

  6. I’ve seen a Cobra replica around – I saw it recently in Verona, I believe, it could have been the same one that was destroyed later.

  8. Kristen Kemp…I was on the scene as a firefighter. Someone had a video of the entire incident from right after she called 9-1-1. Was this your neighbor? I’d like to get a copy of the video for our website to as a way to show people just how quickly a car fire can get out of control. Thanks!
