a) Beautiful. It’s just a mom breastfeeding her child.
b) Awful. The kid’s too old to be doing that.
c) Offensive and perpetuates the battle between mothers, because of the heading, “Are You Mom Enough?”
d) Just made to cause a stir which it has.

Pretty much C. They chose that photo to inflame and offend (Woohoo! Page hits!).

I wish people would get just as offended and disgusted by childhood physical, sexual, and verbal abuse.

Must be part of the “edgy mom” movement.

p.s. she’s obviously doing it for the weight control. It’s practically as good as smoking.

I think that mom moved here from Park Slope.

Ewwwww I feel violated. That is a. child abuse 2. a pedophile 3. the reason we need dyfs.

Before anyone gets on my case – switch genders, daddy helping his pre-teen take a bath – then tell me how I don’t get it because I’m not a mom.

    She’s hot

The kid is too old. This is gross. Ewwwww…

I agree with the posters that say the kid is too old. Creepy. Also, from a biological standpoint, the “lesser” mammals don’t breastfeed their young at this equivalent advanced age. (What is he? 3? 4?)

  9. POSTED BY Right of Center  |  May 10, 2012 @ 2:17 pm

    He looks 5 to me.

Poor kid. He’ll never live that picture down in middle school.

Yes Im with ROC 2 times today now.

Being called “Little Johnny Titty Sucker” will be fun in middle school. Thanks mom for being an attention whore and ruining my life.

Well, all I have to say is: Thanks to Time for making a Mother’s Day even more special for moms who choose to breastfeed past “acceptable” ages. As if parenting isn’t difficult enough.

Don’t bother dealing with affordable childcare, parental leave, Universal Pre-K so all our children start on close-to the same playing field. You know, things that are tougher to editorialize about than how a family chooses to care for itself.

As far as breastfeeding a child of that age, it’s not a decision I would make (or did make), but not something I think merits signicant scrutiny or judgment.

However, putting your kid on the cover of a national magazine to make a point…

  13. POSTED BY Georgette Gilmore  |  May 10, 2012 @ 4:08 pm

That’s how I feel msmr. Breastfeeding is not sexual and I don’t think it’s a big deal to nurse a 3 year old. I didn’t go that long, but that was my and my child’s decision.

But this cover does a couple of things wrong in my opinion. It exploits her son and the title of the article is meant to cause more Mommy war.

That being said, what I wouldn’t give to have a body like that.

Is that a female adult model and a child male model? Call the abuse police! I hope that photo doesn’t stay in his portfolio for a few years.

It seems people who find any aspect of breast feeding gross or sexual have never done it themselves.

I looked at this picture and thought, “Ehh” It was just done to shock. I agree with Kristen I wish people were more shocked by actual child abuse.

  16. POSTED BY jerseygurl  |  May 10, 2012 @ 5:19 pm

I don’t find breast feeding gross. Although I question the wisdom of allowing a stranger’s tata to be placed in a little boy’s mouth for a magazine cover. If he didn’t know her before the shoot, I’m sure they’re great pals now.

  17. POSTED BY Holly Korus  |  May 10, 2012 @ 5:28 pm

Please tell me that is her kid.

If not I take what I said back. He will be the coolest kid in middle school. Johnny got to second base in Pre-K with a hot model. High 5’s all around.

  18. POSTED BY walleroo  |  May 10, 2012 @ 5:34 pm

    Breastfeeding is not sexual

When mom is wearing yoga tights with her knee bent and one hand on her hip and looking pouty at the camera, it’s downright pornographic. Which was the probably the idea.

  19. POSTED BY walleroo  |  May 10, 2012 @ 5:35 pm

And yeah, she’s also hot. (Poor kid.)

  20. POSTED BY msmr  |  May 10, 2012 @ 6:35 pm

The child on the cover is her actual child.

    He turns 4 next month.

And she’s 26 (I note at the risk of encouraging the commentary on her looks.)

    Q & A:

  21. POSTED BY jerseygurl  |  May 10, 2012 @ 8:18 pm

I stand corrected. But it sure looks like a set up to me.

Ideally, we would see more moms breastfeeding 4-yr-olds so our culture can get used to the fact that it’s perfectly healthy and normal. I’m not liking the title however.

btw, in response to one of the comments, I would totally be fine with a dad helping a pre-teen with his kid’s bath as long as the kid was comfortable with it. Each kid is different and that sense of modesty and wish for privacy doesn’t kick in at the same age for each kid.

Don’t worry. No one’s picking on this kid in middle school….he’s home schooled.

And I agree…the problem is not that he’s still breastfeeding at 4, it’s that his mother is willing to exploit him so publicly that’s sad.

I'm struck by how much attention is being paid to the details of a parking lot, as opposed to the attention paid to the future impact of the monstrous projects being planned.
